  • Goschenhoppen Historians, Inc. :: Uncommon Fraktur Treasures

    Festival This painting was auctioned by silent bid at the Goschenhoppen Historians Booksellers stand Festival Prep The Festival takes many many hours of preparation each year Here are some pictures of the Wheat Harvest where a group of volunteers gather and tie off wheat bundles which are used during the Festival by the demonstrators The Antes Plantation The beauty of the Antes Plantation with its 18th century restored four story stone home is the back drop that is conducive to the authentic interpretation of the Pennsylvania German folk culture and is the ideal location to continue the tradition of the Folk Festival Since 1966 The Goschenhoppen Folk Festival has showcased the trades and home skills of the Pennsylvania Dutch in the 18 th and 19 th centuries Today over 500 costumed volunteers recreate kitchens parlors trade shops and itinerants to bring to life the hands on skills from the past This family friendly event provides not just an exceptional educational experience but also gives the children an opportunity to try first hand the pleasantries of a former time Dipping candles creating a rag doll petting a calf sampling potato candy or rolling a barrel hoop bring a sure smile Moms and Dads will find a new appreciation of the appliances and gadgets that fill homes and garages today when the labor to make dinner or furnish a home in times past is demonstrated blacksmiths tinsmiths and whitesmiths sweat over the forges farmers hoist heavy loads of grain into the horse operated fanning mill and women make every meal from scratch Needle workers show the painstaking process of garment construction starting with the flax seed to the hemming of a linen shirt with all the steps in between The annual Goschenhoppen Folk Festival is always held in August on the 2nd Saturday and the Friday before It is a non commercial family oriented day in Goschenhoppen Old fashioned Pennsylvania Dutch foods are for sale on the festival grounds Volunteers dressed in authentic costumes of the periods use authentic tools in recreating traditional home skills trades pastimes foods and folk music Stage programs and lectures scholarly and entertaining serious and humorous in the PA Dutch dialect and in English are presented throughout the day Since 1977 a Student Apprentice Program has introduced and educated countless numbers of school children to the traditional ways of Goschenhoppen These young apprentices are included each year in festival activities Nothing has been left out to make your visit one that the entire family will enjoy Fantastic foods are available to satisfy every appetite ample seating under shade trees abounds and a new appreciation of our ancestors is priceless for all For more information click here or call 215 234 8953 Read More About Us An article about the festival and the museum has been published in the July August 2015 edition of Pennsylvania Magazine An article from the 2012 Folk Festival was published in the Town and Country a local newspaper To read the two page

    iced tea lemonade vinegar punch raspberry shrub grape drink coffee and cold water Are pets allowed No pets are allowed on the Folk Festival grounds Only service animals are permitted due to the number of other animals and livestock we h ave on the property How can I volunteer We have an Apprentice Program for students in 6 th 12 th grade click here for details We offer them the opportunity to learn traditional skills and trades from master craftspeople and knowledgeable historians thereby preserving segments of our history Adults may get involved in the Folk Festival in a number of ways click here for details We are looking for new volunteers who are willing to learn and spend the needed time to hone the skills necessary to become a master craftsperson Besides demonstrating a trade or home skill other volunteers are needed at the Folk Festival Positions need to be filled in the concessions and food stands admission gates set up crews etc We appreciate all those who offer to help us with all of the tasks that need to be done What is the clothing being worn at the Folk Festival The men and women demonstrating at the Folk Festival are dressed in typical everyday working garb that corresponds to the time frame and type tools used in their demonstration Many of the veteran craftspeople own their own reproduction costumes while new volunteers may borrow from the Historians costume collection Who are the Pennsylvania Dutch A minority group essentially German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania starting in 1683 They have lacked unity among their numerous component groups so political advantage concessions in education and local recognition of language or customs were often extinguished by passage of time change and advance of technology The Pennsylvania Dutch William T Parsons 1976 When is the Folk Festival each year The Folk Festival is always held the second Saturday in August and the day before The 2016 Festival will be held Friday August 12 and Saturday August 13 How is the Folk Festival laid out and what kinds of demonstrations are being shown You will notice that most of the 18 th century hearth cooking demonstrations and 18 th century men s trades demonstrations are located on the southern side of the Antes Plantation where the restored four story stone house is located The raised bed garden and bake oven are also located there A Revolutionary soldier s encampment can be found near the house as well Pastimes needlework and clothing construction exhibits are found in the shady grove of trees directly behind the raised bed garden Most of the 19 th century cookstove demonstrations 19 th century men s trade demonstrations farming equipment butchering and animal exhibits can be found on the northern side of the plantation Food concessions and stage programs are centrally located in the heart of the property Children s games horse drawn wagon rides and book sales are also located here Upon entry to the Folk Festival
