  • Greater Milwaukee Foundation :: Dorothy Shaw
    of a lifetime and beyond When Dorothy Shaw died in 1980 she left both a wish and a challenge to the Greater Milwaukee Foundation In a brief paragraph in her 10 page will the quiet and conservative widow of a prominent Milwaukee attorney wrote simply that she was leaving the Foundation the balance of her estate about 4 5 million to support research at the University of Wisconsin Madison and University of Wisconsin Milwaukee in the fields of biochemistry biological science and cancer research Having lost two sisters to cancer and having once worked for the Wisconsin Anti Tuberculosis Association Shaw perhaps understood the role research could play on eradicating such diseases Shaw s idea was subject to interpretation and creativity What the Foundation ultimately designed in 1982 with guidance from a group of leading researchers and local scientists was the Shaw Scientist Program a unique grant program that is advancing research in those fields and giving encouragement to young scientists at a critical point in their careers Sciences goes in unexpected directions said Owen Griffith dean of the Medical College of Wisconsin s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and a member of the program s advisory panel You may see an opportunity but you don t have the money The program provides researchers 200 000 to pursue opportunities that may be promising but are considered too unconventional for traditional funding Unlike most research grants Shaw grants are unrestricted and can be used for everything from equipment purchases to salaries for research assistants Recent winners have explored how to fight bacteria and studied ways of turning off signals that encourage cancer cells to grow In addition to 2 million in special grants it has given more than 11 million to scientists to pursue projects that might one day lead to

    Investment Information Donor Stories BranchingOut Give Online Learn More Contact a member of our philanthropic services team to learn more about starting a fund Build a Stronger Community Learn how through our impact areas Home Donors Donor Stories Irv Terchak Millionaire next door leaves West Allis Public Library 1 3 million Eighty five year old Irv Terchak was the millionaire next door Modest and unassuming the bachelor and West Allis native lived in the two bedroom ranch home he once shared with his parents Although he loved gardening and dancing a bad leg made both difficult The WWII veteran was active with local veterans organizations and honored in 1991 as Wisconsin Veteran of the Year for 17 years of volunteer service He never occupied a corner office during his years working for Wisconsin Motors then Allis Chalmers and after retirement as a part time bank courier Still he left an estate that surprised all who knew him including the West Allis Public Library to which he left its bulk 1 3 million It is thought to be the largest single bequest to a Milwaukee County library As a show of appreciation and a thank you for the long hours he must have enjoyed reading in the library s periodicals section Terchak s gift and the flexible guidelines for its use allowed the library s board to create an endowment in the Foundation As a noncritical city service the library has been hit hard over the years by tight budgets Terchak s generosity is softening those blows and will continue to maintain the quality of the institution about which he cared forever Previous Story Donor Stories Next Story Learn More Contact a member of our philanthropic services team to learn more about starting a fund Build a Stronger Community Learn how

    Funds Investment Information Donor Stories BranchingOut Give Online Learn More Contact a member of our philanthropic services team to learn more about starting a fund Build a Stronger Community Learn how through our impact areas Home Donors Donor Stories Mary Tingley The art of making a difference beautifully If artist Nancy Metz White s bright and colorful Tree of Life makes you smile as you drive down Bluemound Road past Mitchell Boulevard Park Mary Tingley s dream has come true The sculpture and other public art projects in Milwaukee parks along the Hank Aaron State Trail and at the Waukesha Transit Center were made possible by the fund Tingley created to stimulate involvement and appreciation of the visual arts especially three dimensional art in the greater Milwaukee area Tingley was a professor emeritus in the metals department of the School of Fine Arts at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee She began teaching in 1957 in the art department later became chair of the metals department and taught at the university until 1988 Tingley passed away in 2000 In addition to public art a bequest added to her Acorn Fund has created a legacy of scholarships and artists in residence programs The fund also has helped fund equipment and other renovations for local metalsmithing and jewelry making programs that are strengthening art education in area schools The more than 368 000 granted from the Mary A Tingley Fund since its inception in 1996 is just the beginning The Foundation s strong investment returns have helped the value of Tingley s fund and her legacy grow way beyond her initial gift Previous Story Donor Stories Next Story Learn More Contact a member of our philanthropic services team to learn more about starting a fund Build a Stronger Community Learn how through our

    West Bend area and their scholarships have helped hundreds of students fulfill their dreams This is our 60th year of scholarships through The Ziegler Family Foundation and during that time we ve had 250 scholars Doug explains Education is our biggest area of interest especially scholarships We ve provided more than 12 million in scholarships to students over the years It s important to keep up those scholarships Unless students have a good education they won t be the kind of leaders they could be When you see the success of projects you ve helped with serving the needs of the community it s wonderful Giving is such a great reward The Ziegler Family Foundation Fund affiliated with the West Bend Community Foundation grew from the Ziegler Foundation which Doug s father established in 1944 It was the family s way to give back to the community where the businesses started by the family BC Ziegler Company and the West Bend Company were thriving Sharon grew up in Iowa where her own family s principled tradition of giving whatever you had to give was honored It continued when she married Doug 31 years ago and moved to West Bend Having the opportunity to give and serve is what I really enjoy Sharon explained When you see the success of projects you ve helped with serving the needs of the community it s wonderful Giving is such a great reward The couple s giving extends beyond their own foundation Doug along with his friend the late Cliff Nelson was one of the cofounders and first president of the West Bend Community Foundation in 1999 Doug s generous 1 million gift matched by Nelson provided seed money for the foundation Sharon is the foundation board s current president The couple both remain
