  • People & Nature
to some being near water soothes the human soul as well an idea seemingly evident in the number of people drawn to waterways for recreation Whatever the compelling factor rivers enable us to thrive So is true for the natural communities that make up river ecosystems Fish and other aquatic life occupy different reaches of a river and some such as the Pacific salmon travel for thousands of miles on epic migratory paths Many bird species also use rivers and wetlands during migration as waypoints for food and rest and for nesting during breeding season Riparian forests the woodlands along floodplains depend on a river s seasonal flooding to nourish their soil and provide habitat to a wide range of other life As the world continues to develop however these inner connected systems become increasingly imbalanced Rivers degraded by sediment and pollution put people s health at risk result in higher treatment costs and diminish wildlife habitat Poorly planned dams drastically impact river flow interrupting critical fish migration and often leaving downstream lowland habitats without the cyclical ebbs and flows they need to support life The consequences are grave for both people and nature The Great Rivers Partnership collaborates with

  • Flood & Drought Management
water or the debris and sediment associated with flooding Likewise while many municipal water supplies are capable of ensuring safe drinking water during flood events private drinking wells can become contaminated by floodwaters which tend to mobilize bacteria The plants and animals occupying floodplains on the other hand have evolved to cope with floods In fact many species rely on changing water levels as part of their life cycle Frequent or intense flood events however can lead to erosion destroyed breeding grounds and declining plant and animal communities Of varying duration and intensity droughts present their own unique challenges These natural events have occurred throughout history and may last from several months to several years Among many impacts droughts often threaten farm production if sufficient rainfall or irrigation is not present to support crops and livestock A shortage of water caused by drought can also affect a number of industries For example drought may significantly reduce the generation of electricity from hydropower biomass or fossil fuel facilities In addition drought affects the availability of aquatic habitat drinking water and food for wildlife The International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River notes however that droughts are not only a physical phenomenon but an interplay between natural water availability and human demands for water supply As the demand for water resources rises the pressure on water grows and regions of the world become increasingly vulnerable during periods without rainfall The Great Rivers Partnership addresses these issues by partnering with government and non governmental agencies to explore infrastructure options that better balance flood control It also supports proof of concept projects that demonstrate the value of reconnecting floodplain ecosystems Intro excerpt adapted with permission from the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Service 1990 New Hampshire drought management plan NHDES WRB 90

  • Indigenous Peoples
Aborigines in Australia they often inhabit remote lands rich in minerals and natural resources Indigenous peoples do not necessarily claim to be the only people native to their country however in many cases they are indeed aboriginal or native there being descendants of peoples that inhabited a territory prior to colonization or formation of the present state With their own distinct languages cultures and social and political institutions indigenous communities live differently than mainstream society They face similar experiences of discrimination and marginalization as other ethnic minorities and yet there are important distinctions in terms of their rights and identity Indigenous peoples have prior rights to their territories lands and resources but often these are taken away from them or they have been forced to leave These populations face serious difficulties such as the constant threat of territorial invasion plundering of their resources cultural and legal discrimination as well as a lack of recognition of their own institutions As part of the Great Rivers Partnership s expansion to new river basins in Phase II indigenous peoples and communal conservation will inform the way we work in geographies worldwide River systems act as the lifeblood to any society and particularly those

  • Wildlife & Ecosystems
us as forests grasslands rivers coastal and deep sea waters islands mountains even cities Each ecosystem represents a solution to a particular challenge to life worked out over millennia each encodes the lessons of survival and efficiency as countless species scramble for sunlight water nutrients and space Stripped of its ecosystems Earth would resemble the stark lifeless images beamed back from Mars by NASA cameras in 1997 That image also underscores the difficulty of recreating the natural life support systems that ecosystems provide should we damage them beyond their capacity to rebound The world s fertile soils for instance are a gift of millions of years of organic and inorganic processes Technology can replicate the nutrients soils provide for crops and native flora but on a global scale the costs would be prohibitive Of course the wealth of wildlife residing in a river basin from fish amphibians reptiles and invertebrates to mammals and birds cannot be replicated The habitat complexity of river floodplain ecosystems is species rich and the interactions of plants and animals are crucial to the system s overall health We know too well that when populations of migratory birds decline for instance it often indicates larger environmental issues impacting us all The Great Rivers Partnership has led a number of ecological assessments to help determine areas most in need of protection Early GRP assessments on the Upper Yangtze River have led to further conservation action and an assessment of Lower Mississippi River is currently underway with the U S Army Corps of Engineers and a host of other partners Intro excerpt reprinted with permission from the World Resources Institute World Resources 2000 2001 People and ecosystems The fraying of the web of life Join Partners in an Effort to Restore the Lower Mississippi Work continues with the
