of West Central Illinois TNC s current 6 700 acre holding at Emiquon is a former Illinois River natural floodplain that was leveed and drained nearly a century ago for agriculture Conservation Significance A total of 236 bird species including 20 threatened and endangered species have been documented since restoration began with peak migratory waterfowl populations approaching 200 000 Nearly two million fish of 31 native species have been stocked at the site Diverse habitats of wetlands prairie wet prairie bluff and floodplain forests are restored components of the preserve Strategy Model a science based landscape scale project restoring and managing functional floodplain habitats and ecological processes to contribute to the health and conservation of the Illinois River ecosystem and the abundant and diverse native plant and animal communities it supports Continue to utilize protocols developed by the Emiquon Science Advisory Council a group of 40 scientists and managers representing a broad range of expertise and experience to monitor a suite of key ecological attributes and associated indicators This will guide restoration and adaptive management of the wetland complex and adjacent lands as an integrated component of the Illinois River ecosystem Restore managed hydrologic connection between the restored floodplain and the Illinois River to afford access of many aquatic organisms to the diversity of floodplain habitats they require to carry out life cycles Share science and lessons learned at Emiquon to influence more effective restoration and management of the Illinois River system and the Mississippi River system Continue to evaluate numerous scientific and social issues including a broad range of floodplain functions and ecosystem services invasive species compatible human use and economic development Back to proof of concept project list TNC TNC TNC TNC TNC TNC TNC TNC TNC TNC TNC TNC TNC TNC Take a Virtual Tour Get a

and bayous to mostly straight line ditches The construction of the main levee and disruption of natural flooding cycles functionally disconnected the floodplain from the Ouachita River Conservation Significance This restoration reconnection project will restore biologically diverse floodplain forest within the Lower Mississippi River Valley and reduce sediment and contaminant import to the adjacent Ouachita River At present it is the only restoration effort at scale to have achieved the goal of levee removal and actual reconnection of the river to its former floodplain Ongoing restoration of internal drainages together with the reconnection to the historic watershed outside the levees has expanded the effective restoration footprint of the project to more than 76 000 acres of combined uplands and bottomlands Strategy A plan was completed to strategically locate breaches in the existing levees in such a manner as to promote a controlled flooding and dewatering while avoiding scouring riverbank degradation and head cutting on the Ouachita River During levee deconstruction in 2010 1 25 million cubic yards of dirt were removed resulting in six breaches in the main Ouachita River levee restoring access to 25 square miles of floodplain that had been disconnected from the river for over 40 years A multi year monitoring program to document long term trends in water quality ecosystem services and biological community condition was implemented Due to the pervasive alteration of waterways and drainages interior hydrology will never be restored to historic conditions Rather the goal is to undertake a series of corrective actions that will begin to restore functionality to the floodplain To that end a restoration plan for the historically significant interior waterways was developed Proposed actions include replacing straight line ditches with recreated stream courses and the removal of flow impediments Expected outcomes include a reduction in nutrients and sediments exported

  • West Tennessee Stream Restoration
efforts in West Tennessee are tackling the most severe aquatic threats pervasive throughout the Lower Mississippi River Basin including stream sedimentation stream channelization geomorphic instability and associated aquatic habitat alteration West Tennessee is home to the Hatchie River which is one of the only unchannelized meandering rivers in the Lower Mississippi River Basin The Hatchie River has a diverse fauna of over 100 fish species 35 mussel species and about 250 bird species which use the bottomland hardwood forests surrounding the river By working simultaneously at multiple restoration sites The Nature Conservancy s TNC Tennessee Chapter is testing and demonstrating how stream channel restoration can improve the flow function and habitats of low gradient river systems in agricultural watersheds Additional efforts address the conservation and restoration of bottomland hardwood forests to improve wildlife habitats Strategy Catalyze greater regional support for integrated floodplain restoration and management by leading an initiative to use seven stream restoration projects for evaluation and demonstration ultimately building river restoration capacity and support of major partners Implement long term systems scale conservation goals to improve floodplain functions such as processing nutrients sediment and woody debris while increasing floodwater storage and habitat quality Closely partner with the most prominent and capable agencies working on river restoration to leverage financial investments and improve restoration effectiveness throughout the West Tennessee region Engage in geomorphic monitoring to gain a better understanding of how low gradient river restoration can work in agricultural watersheds and to demonstrate how restoration of streams and floodplains can provide long term benefits for habitat landowners and local communities Restore incised stream channels and modification of levees to enable floodplain processing of nutrients sediment and woody debris This strategy is demonstrating to landowners and other partners how natural channel restoration can reduce woody debris accumulation in canals process
