  • GSJ's 35th Anniversary Festival at YBCA | Gamelan Sekar Jaya – Music and Dance of Bali
    composers have been immersed in the music of Bali for many years especially in the world of experimental hybrid music that is thriving in Bali and here in the Bay Area Mikrokosma is a product of that interaction Ian Winters live media and Allen Willner lighting design will forge a visual world as unusual and striking as the music growing out of the interaction of theatrical lighting digitally processed video and the music itself which will digitally cue and interact with the visual world INTERMISSION At 9 00 PM Gamelan Sekar Jaya s dancers gamelan gong kebyar and bamboo gamelan jego g perform Sasur a suite of new and classic works celebrating the company s 35 year history as well as the 100 year anniversary of Bali s revolutionary kebyar genre This confluence of anniversaries will be a celebration of old and new refined and playful Sekar Jaya s sixty performers will be under the direction of dancer and choreographer Emiko Saraswati Susilo and master composer and music director I Made Arnawa The group will premiere three new works created by Mr Arnawa and Ms Susilo Pelangi features new movement vocabulary inspired by the jubilant sounds of the bamboo jegog Eka Sruti is a conceptual work that explores sonic relationships emptiness and space in the rich sonorities of the gamelan gong kebyar Teruna Jaya the hallmark masterpiece that spawned the explosive kebyar genre and seventy years later the birth of Gamelan Sekar Jaya will bring the evening full circle All of Sekar Jaya s works will be illuminated by acclaimed lighting designer Patty Ann Farrell Visit the Indiegogo page to hear excerpts of the work in progress and join fellow supporters for the final funding stretch Gamelan Sekar Jaya s is supported by generous grants from the Zellerbach Family Foundation
