  • Former Vice Minister of Energy in Peru joins GVEP International | GVEP International
presence in Latin America and develop its activities mobilizing and increasing its partners network Pedro Gamio Aita former Vice Minister of Energy in Peru and now GVEP International Regional Manager for Latin America describes why he is so passionate about access to sustainable energy I believe that today we face an enormous challenge in establishing an energy policy that allows us both to diversify our global energy options and to reduce poverty through the use of sustainable resources In Latin America we have a great advantage we have the options of hydroenergy wind geothermal and biofuels all of which must be optimised and used The low price of oil is temporary and we must think of the impacts of climate change both in the long and short terms We must work to promote policies that favour change from both the supply and demand perspective because these solutions are obtainable The public and private sectors and civil society can all be important facilitators and promoters In Peru we have passed a bill to promote renewable energies all that remains is to put out a call for diversified biddings Natural gas is a non renewable energy source which must be conserved and used efficiently giving precedence to our internal market Simultaneously we need to focus on strategic planning for the future considering potential scenarios along with scientific knowledge If we take good advantage of our energetic potential in the search for sustainability not only do we help the economy s competitiveness but we also enlarge the market and create more opportunities for Peruvians living in a subsistence economy We must continue to workto create opportunities for those who lack the most basic public services and in particular energy With renewable energies and the efficient use of energy we will be able to

  • Simon Collings to join GVEP International as Chief Operations Officer | GVEP International
for 16 years and I have been a member of Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace for two decades Energy access and climate change are both critical issues today Without access to a reliable source of energy that does not further contribute to global warming the world s poorest people have little chance of working their way out of poverty GVEP International works to counter this challenge by supporting the implementation of viable business solutions that provide energy services Operating through a widespread network of Partners GVEP International is in a unique position to bring together the different actors who can create change To be part of this community is for me an immense privilege As the incoming Chief Operations Officer my goal is to help GVEP International and its Partners really make a difference Paper plans are no use to people who have no access to power Over the coming years I see GVEP International playing a central role in ensuring more and more people are able to access clean reliable energy from technologies such as biogas and small scale hydroelectric schemes We ll do this by helping to disseminate best practices by enabling practitioners to find examples of successful schemes they can learn from and by putting people in touch with one another We will actively help to develop the capacity of small scale enterprises including support to find funding and appropriate suppliers and we will be supporting technological innovation In addition GVEP International helps coordinate platforms of key local actors to work with the government to develop national energy access strategies and project pipelines It is the combination of these different elements knowledge practical intervention and influencing policy which together can make a difference I feel excited and daunted but above all I am looking forward to
