  • Private sector to light up a third of households without access to the grid by 2020 | GVEP International
    31 News Announcement Tags Off grid The off grid lighting and household electrification sector will help light up close to 100 million homes by 2020 according to market trends presented at the 4th International Off Grid Lighting Conference organized by the Global Off Grid Lighting Association GOGLA and the World Bank Group WBG in Dubai UAE this week The event showcased global efforts to improve energy access for those without reliable grid based electricity by promoting clean quality off grid lighting solutions To date the industry has helped customers save around 3 billion in outgoings such as kerosene and batteries according to WBG and GOGLA collected data presented at the event Since the first conference in Ghana in 2008 when the industry was just taking off more than 15 million solar lighting and electrification products have been sold reaching 66 million people according to IFC Findings from a Bloomberg New Energy Finance report due for release in January 2016 also highlight how investors have taken note and pumped almost a quarter of a billion dollars into the sector in the past two years alone with emerging pay as you go business models gaining particular traction Read the full story Share

  • Climate change: UK overseas aid for energy projects gives twice as much to fossil fuel ventures as renewables | GVEP International
    has invested 5bn for energy in developing countries such as Ethiopia Bangladesh Nepal and Afghanistan ranging from loans to grants between 2009 and 2013 More than 2bn went to fossil fuels such as oil coal and gas 43 per cent of the total Only around 1bn went on renewable forms of energy such as wind or solar power 19 per cent of the total The research by the Overseas Development Institute for relief agency Cafod draws on data including Department for International Development and Organisation for Economic Co Operation and Development statistics The carbon intensive projects supported included 200m to a major coal plant in South Africa More than half a billion was spent on an oil and gas operation run by Brazilian company Petrobras Read more The findings indicate conflict within the Government While positive action to protect the climate is being taken by the Department for International Development and the Department for Energy and Climate Change much of Britain s support for fossil fuels in recent years has come from the Department of Business through UK export finance say campaigners Continuing to back the development of fossil fuels doesn t make sense in light of the UK s goals on climate change and poverty Export finance seems like the elephant in the room said Neil Thorns of Cafod We need consistency across government so all departments work towards the same goals A Government spokesman said The UK Government announced in 2013 that it would end support for new coal fired power plants overseas In September the Prime Minister announced that the UK s international climate finance would increase by 50 per cent to 5 8bn from 2016 21 providing further help to the 17 million people who have already been given help to cope with the effects of

    Ensure access to affordable reliable sustainable and modern energy for all According to Ban who spoke with UN Member State diplomats at a briefing in New York City US on 16 September 2015 SE4All has created a foundation to support the goal In particular he noted SE4All s mobilization of thousands of public private and civil society partners creation of a network of hubs preparation of more than 30 developing country Action Agendas and Investment Prospectuses establishment of the Global Energy Efficiency Accelerator Platform mobilization of financial commitments and ability to monitor progress through the Global Tracking Framework However Ban also said that more work is needed so that SE4All may grow and be as effective as we need it to be He highlighted the importance of a solid long term institutional arrangement for the initiative which will soon by housed by an international not for profit organization founded for this purpose called the Sustainable Energy for All Partnership The Partnership will maintain a close relationship with the UN Ban expressed confidence in the recent appointment of Rachel Kyte World Bank Vice President to head the Partnership as its CEO and as Special Representative of the Secretary General for SE4All
