    electricity There are a significant number of people who are unable to charge their mobile phone at their home or place of business These users instead charge their mobile phone at a local charging station which may be quite a distance In light of the mobile phone industry s interest in enabling customers to charge phones we are working closely with the GSM Association GSMA to share knowledge and potential solutions A number of our clients sell products designed for micro enterprises interested in providing phone charging services in off grid areas and them in piloting these products We evaluated the impact of available phone charging services in the community on ARPU average revenue per user using data on subscriber call and text volumes before and after the charging service was available and presented our findings at a 2013 GSMA workshop in Kampala The analysis showed a 20 increase in usage when people were able to charge more regularly and in closer proximity to home We are now working with GSMA on a larger scale study in Tanzania and contributed to a White Paper published by the GSMA in late 2013 In another study conducted in the Lake Region of Tanzania seeking to determine demand and identify entrepreneurs willing to provide phone charging services we found that 64 of men and 50 of women over the age of 15 owned a phone and almost half travel between 4 km and 18 km to charge their phone This results in phones being inactive much of the time 58 of mobile phone users continually turn their phones off to conserve battery When asking entrepreneurs if they were interested in starting a mobile phone charging business 75 out of 82 said they would consider it citing an increase in their personal income as
