    be signed this week with Uganda and Sierra Leone will confirm our political determination to work closer in partnership and will set out a concrete roadmap of action to fight energy poverty ElectriFI is not only a financing mechanism it puts forward an innovative business model to leverage more private investments and involve more key stakeholders in all areas of expertise on a global level It has the potential to take donor funding and increase it five or ten fold Through the ElectriFI initiative EU grants will complement private financing bridging potential financial gap in order to make a project bankable This will provide the security investors and banks are expecting to boost investments If investments are successful the grants will be converted into loans at a concessional rate and the EU will be reimbursed The EU will then be able to reinvest its grants in new projects allowing more and more people to get access to electricity services A total of 270 million have been earmarked for the next few years to support this effort The joint declarations with Uganda co signed with Germany and France and Sierra Leone will serve to reinforce the political ownership of these countries on energy policy which is crucial for their sustainable development They are a clear sign of the EU s commitment to strengthening cooperation in the field of energy with partner countries and other donors and will be used as a concrete roadmap for action These joint declarations bring the total number of such political agreements signed so far to seven Similar agreements setting solid roadmaps to energy development are being prepared with 20 more countries in particular with those that have selected energy as priority for bilateral cooperation with the EU EU support to energy in developing countries Nearly 1

    the U S Department of Energy and in which the United Nations Foundation is a partner recently conducted an online survey to better understand the global market of off grid clean energy system compatible appliances The goal of the survey was to help market actors throughout the energy access value chain make better informed decisions regarding off grid appliances from investment and policy interventions to manufacturing and procurement Between 18 December 2014 and 13 January 2015 a total of 239 energy access professionals many of whom were Practitioner Network members identified the top five household and healthcare appliances that they think will inspire the greatest off grid consumer demand over the next 3 to 5 years and that they think are likely to drive the greatest energy access e g socioeconomic or environmental benefits The survey shows that for off grid household and small enterprise applications LED room lighting appliances mobile phone charging banks televisions radios refrigeration fans and solar water pumps are the appliances with the highest likely demand in that order For healthcare and clinical applications refrigeration sterilizers auto claves patient monitors and portable ultrasound machines are consistently ranked as the top four off grid clinical appliances in

    private sector It is coordinated by the World Bank s InfoDev through its Climate Technology Programme CTP and supports green growth through strengthened domestic capacity and financing for the transfer development and deployment of innovative climate solutions KCIC s award comes after the conclusion of the Geneva Climate Change Conference held from 8 13 February 2015 where climate change financing was a key point during the negotiations As a party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change UNFCC KCIC has been at the forefront of implementing clauses that are likely to enhance how Kenya is responding to climate change Over the last two years KCIC has been working with the private sector in Kenya to facilitate climate technology innovation and linkage to markets By providing business technical and financial support to over 100 small and medium enterprises KCIC has been able to mitigate over 59 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent KCIC was launched in 2012 with joint funding by UKaid and the Danish International Development Agency DANIDA and was the first Climate Innovation Centre CIC to be set up in the world UKaid has supported the establishment of KCIC with 4m about Ksh 564m through the Strengthening

  • ECREEE launches campaign to promote women’s role in energy access | GVEP International
    not appropriately harnessed and utilized cannot achieve the goal of sustainable energy for all SE4ALL globally and in the ECOWAS region For a sector that is STEM science technology engineering and mathematics driven on the surface the reasons why there are fewer women in the sector are easy to trace For instance statistics show that compared to the number of males graduating from STEM Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics departments in higher institutions of learning there are significantly fewer female graduates In 2012 the percentage of female students that graduated from STEM fields in the Gambia Ghana and Liberia were 24 15 and 23 respectively ECREEE and its partners aims to address these inequalities by tackling the underlying factors behind this a survey conducted in the region revealed that social norms tend to allocate jobs to men and women with men being the preferred gender for jobs related to technology pointing out that the these factors are more of perceptions than realities These perceptions are hindering women from having the same opportunities as men to a sector that is dynamic and could benefit women in terms of improving their social status and influence in their communities To raise awareness of and strengthen advocacy on the issue ECREEE is inviting the public to share articles photos or video clips of relevance to the subject matter on twitter and on the ECOW GEN website www ecowgen ecreee org using the hashtag Standtall In addition the Centre is inviting young women and men 16 to 32 years of age from the ECOWAS region to participate in its online competition to promote the initiative ECREEE is calling for articles that meet the following criteria provide an in depth analysis of the issue of women being under represented in the energy sector particularly in the
