this triangle of resources are known collectively as the water energy food nexus Understanding water energy food inter linkages and managing them holistically is critical to sustainability in the sector But while some private enterprises in the agrifood sector understand the significance of the nexus and some have already seen competitive advantages in nexus driven solutions for sustainable crop management processing distribution and retailing most do not REEEP has since 2012 put special emphasis on tackling the nexus focusing in particular on the agrifood sector the most prominent single subsector within the nexus alone accounting for some 80 of total freshwater use 30 of total energy demand and 12 30 of man made greenhouse gas emissions worldwide With global food production expected to increase 70 by 2050 the sector is facing unprecedented resource pressures with more on the horizon The cornerstone of these efforts is the nexus portfolio of the 9th Call nine projects that demonstrated the new thinking among small and medium sized enterprises about how nexus thinking can be both profitable and sustainable Building upon those projects is an in house study commissioned by the FAO on nexus driven business cases within the agrifood sector The new 10th

  • How a new breed of distributed energy services companies can reach 500mm energy-poor customers within a decade | GVEP International
context of growing interest in the potential of mini grids to provide a solution to the energy access challenge Taking a step back from a dogmatic view of specific systems as a panacea it focuses on a technology agnostic market driven approach to rapidly scaling up the availability of rural energy services the distributed energy service company or DESCO model that we believe with the right conditions could efficiently and cost effectively reach somewhere close to 500mm people over the coming decade The paper outlines the characteristics of the DESCO model and discusses how it is different from the more mainstream energy access approaches It then puts forth a series of developments that in our view will need to be facilitated very soon for the model to realise its potential with a particular focus on the amount and nature of financing that will be required for broader DESCO penetration In so doing it is our aim to stimulate a fresh debate on energy access and help to concretely advance the agenda because despite increasing interest in this critically important area of basic service delivery with the current modus operandi there is a very real risk that the goal of achieving
