    a threat to our climate Almost 12 million people in sub Saharan Africa are enjoying improved access to energy due to the growth of the 3 000 businesses we support Collectively these businesses are contributing to the eradication of energy poverty and to the development of a low carbon economy says Ben Good GVEP s CEO Poverty cannot be eradicated and sustainable development cannot be delivered without investments to support the expansion of energy access in off grid areas where most of the world s poor live claims the report As of today such investments only target large government led infrastructure projects Achieving universal access to electricity requires a combination of grid based and off grid solutions In fact nearly 60 of the additional generation required to achieve universal electricity access needs to come from off grid solutions both stand alone and mini grids This is the domain of small and medium sized enterprises operating in remote locations close to consumers Access for off grid areas can be achieved through affordable renewable energy solutions The Annual Review provides many examples of the different ways GVEP is working with entrepreneurs to help them realise their visions of profitable growth whilst expanding

    Advisory Services Peter is an expert in power and renewables with 20 years of experience as an investor lender and strategic adviser mostly in developing countries Peter is a non executive director of Triodos Renewables a community oriented investor in small sized renewable projects and a Board Member of Renewable World an NGO which alleviates poverty in developing countries through micro renewable projects Peter is also a visiting lecturer at ESCP Business School He was previously global head of finance and investment for two power equipment suppliers Siemens Wind Power and MAN He led the European energy lending team at GE Capital and was an executive director at Westdeutsche Landesbank Peter has a BA in Economics and Politics from the University of Warwick Peter joins the GVEP team at a time of considerable flux and opportunity for capital flows into the renewable energy energy access sector In some respects we are seeing progress now that was difficult to imagine five years ago but in many ways and in many countries huge challenges remain I am delighted that Peter is joining the GVEP team bringing many years of energy finance experience across a full spectrum of project and business types in

    facilitate consumer finance The Keyo Pottery Women s Group in Kisumu Western Kenya deals in the production of improved cookstoves and briquettes They are known to the local market for the quality of their products Over the years GVEP has supported the group in various ways it has provided technology mentoring to improve the products performance supported them to access bank loans to increase the scale of production so as to lower the cost enhanced their marketing know how and expanded their customer reach through a series of market development events Dorothy Apondi a group member says these kind of targeted interventions have enabled customers in new markets to access their products Because of our steady production and push marketing campaigns we now attract clients from across the country including individual buyers distributors engaged in bulk supplies and assemblers who come to us for cookstove liners We also sell directly to schools as well as to Kenya s Ministry of Energy who in turn sell them to farmers says Apondi A number of organisations involved in renewable energy also purchase the products from them directly for onward selling In total the group has 42 stable customers who purchase from them on a regular basis In a month the group sells an average of 2 000 cookstove liners each retailing at Ksh 25 0 24 and between 50 and 60 cookstoves per month at Ksh 1 000 9 8 per piece Apondi adds that having access to additional capital has been instrumental in scaling up production to meet the increased demand GVEP has made it possible for us to access loans from banks by guaranteeing us for the credit facilities says Apondi GVEP also facilitates networking for all players in the value chain in order to ensure effective reach of energy

  • Women entrepreneurs to sell solar lighting to off-grid Senegal | GVEP International
    solar lamps Solar products and services will be sold by individual women entrepreneurs women s groups or associations Entrepreneurs are organised by geographical department each zone having a nominated point of contact that deals directly with the retailer Total Senegal through a commercial contract To facilitate the distribution and payment of products each point of contact collects orders in her area and relays it to the supplier An initial contribution of 25 of the product value is required the remaining 75 being paid to the supplier within 60 days of delivery To date 624 lamps have been delivered in Kédougou and 420 in Tambacounda In the long term this will reduce barriers related to Lack of awareness Most consumers are unaware of the existence of solar lanterns and their economic benefits In the absence of an alternative energy source rural people turn towards kerosene or candles for lighting which are expensive and hazardous Awareness campaigns are needed not only to enable consumers to distinguish good and bad quality lanterns but also to generate a change in consumer practices Initial costs Most poor rural households cannot afford to buy the products upfront which are most of the time at a high cost even if they are more economical in the long term The project will identify innovative mechanisms to facilitate access to credit for example through payments by installment or regular payments Distribution networks The high cost of distributing the products has led suppliers of solar lights to focus their commercial activity in urban and suburban areas leaving many rural areas with fewer options to power their homes and businesses To promote the benefits of adopting these solar lamps for micro enterprises and in households GVEP and partner SEM Fund are organising information days to popularise and promote the products in
