  • Jatropha plant power | GVEP International
    directly without the need for further processing so farmers can produce their own fuel locally In Chibombo they can produce 400 litres of biofuel a day from about 2 tons of seeds The project in which these women participated was part of a community generated power project run by Development Aid from People to People in Zambia DAPP the GAIA Movement and GVEP International Funded initially through the GVEP GAP Fund and a second phase financing through USAID the project aimed to reduce local dependency on imported energy sources and improve the local and global environment by increasing options for income generation DAPP believes Jatropha has the potential to do this and hopes that additional funding can be secured to continue the project Much has been done to spread the word about Jatropha oil and interest has been widespread Pamphlets entitled Growing Jatropha were distributed at the Lusaka fair and dozens of representatives from foreign and local NGOs the Ministry of Agriculture and Zambian agricultural producers received this too along with Soil to Oil at a conference organized by Agro Pro Forum A Community Generated Power Conference offered a further opportunity to disseminate information to a range of participants including representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources USAID and the Zambian Biofuel Association as well as local village leaders and farmers Interest in the project among farmers has been such that about 800 smallholders have now been trained in Jatropha growing and currently there are about 80 000 plants being cultivated A large number of farmers have also been taught how to produce soap and how to use the oil in a simple lamp in order to cut down their washing and lighting costs Although it is still undergoing endurance testing at Delhi College of Engineering the dual

  • Water wheels project designed to help rural communities in Peru wins award | GVEP International
    PUCP Innovation Development Center of the PUCP which promotes the use of the University to create and develop companies that produce value added goods and services According to Miguel Hadzich Chief Project Engineer this is a totally environmental machine that will generate energy for farmers in the field The project will study the design test and market eight types of water wheels designed to work best in different scenarios and to meet the needs of people in the Peruvian coast jungle and mountain ranges We will develop water wheels that provide three different levels of power One will generate 500 watts another will produce 1KW and the third will make 2KW As results are shown we may even develop one with greater energy production explained Miguel Hadzich With 500 watts you will be able to charge batteries cell phones etc and with one kilowatt a house in a rural area will have enough energy to run lamps TVs the internet etc added Hadzich We will test eight prototypes Three will be tested on the Peruvian coast particularly in areas that have irrigation systems that work at a speed different from that of the channels in order to see how the machines perform We are also going to install water wheels in two rivers located in the Andean mountain range In the Amazonian jungle we are going to test three water wheels on floating water rafts concluded Miguel Hadzich The basic designs will be easy to reproduce locally in poor areas They will also be easy to maintain and install The prototypes will provide energy to approximately 100 families Later local companies will be created to market and distribute the water wheels In time it is expected that with the support of NGOs and training centers these small companies will be

    by Laure Ego 11 Dec 2009 GVEP International has agreed to provide financial and technical support to the Group for Technological Research and Exchange GRET developers of the RIAED network It is hoped that the collaboration will enable both organizations to further expand their Francophone activities The GRET Group for Technological Research and Exchange is both the host and manager of the RIAED network The RIAED consists of an international network of Francophone experts involved in energy access projects in developing countries working through a collaborative website www riaed net This site permits members to post documents and facilitates exchanges between experts However RIAED s initial funding stream ended in 2008 and with its future in doubt GVEP International stepped forwards to offer support in view of the complementarity of the sites and with the intention of optimizing resources GVEP International benefits from the Francophone experience of RIAED and RIAED makes the most out of the interactive tools available on the GVEP International website as well as its broad network of partners Moreover as GVEP International s site is primarily a collaborative site between its Partners and RIAED focuses more on Francophone news and technical resources the close collaboration offers

  • Developing Energy Enterprise Project: a report from the field | GVEP International
    visited energy entrepreneurs who were trained over the last year and a half within the DEEP Programme Most of the enterprises were micro in size with investments roughly between US 100 500 While some were starting or diversifying into energy enterprises others were strengthening their energy businesses The range of energy technology products were commonly briquettes solar phone charging and cookstoves One of the major impacts that the DEEP programme has had on the entrepreneurs is that many of them are now becoming adept at record keeping a key business skill gained from the training programmes Ruthey Msenye a women entrepreneur in Tanzania said after trainings she knows exactly what her incomings are per month evident from her record books One of the challenges working with rural based micro entrepreneurs in East Africa is that they do not rely on the energy business as their main income source To overcome this challenge DEEP EA is training groups of business mentors linking them to the entrepreneurs to help strengthen their business Generally the visit was very positive DEEP EA partners in all three countries are actively providing valuable linkages to other organisations especially energy product suppliers They are also gathering information
