  • Development Paths in the Caribbean | GVEP International
    to the challenges to and opportunities for sustainable development The study is divided into two parts The first part of the study examines trajectories for development in the Caribbean while the second addresses the relationship between competition and integration The significant development gains attained since independence have been threatened in the last decade Slowing productivity growth rising debt increasing crime and social dislocation in recent years have adversely affected growth in per capita income and social welfare The study therefore calls on policy makers to promote dynamic drivers of growth and development in the region The key requirement in this regard is the need to strengthen import productivity or the efficiency with which the region uses foreign exchange This can be done by producing and exporting more high value services such as education and the output of the creative industries The sub region also needs to strengthen its systems of governance by providing more opportunities for citizens to participate in decision making Authors ECLAC Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean and AFD French Development Agency If you want to learn more visit the Caribbean page on the AFD website http www afd fr lang en home pays amerique

    explain the continued challenges faced by poor and vulnerable people Resource inequality i e unequal access to key resources such as energy and water is a significant barrier to inclusive growth and to inclusive and equitable development The series also explores how to address these development deficits as well as some of the emerging innovations in policy and social technology which are beginning to emerge as an answer to the combined effects of unequal access to resources and basic services unequal access to income and finance and unequal burdens from environmental degradation These Policy Research Briefs seek to understand the approaches which can help to restore the balance through benefits sharing burden sharing and risk sharing Renewed attention on environmental sustainability provides a significant opportunity to explore the more fundamental and structural causes of poverty and inequality and Rio 20 the policy space to discuss true transformational change across the three pillars The series also examines the opportunities and barriers to change through the lens of greening growth and some of the structural differences between countries By tackling this cross section of policy challenges it seeks to both deepen and broaden the policy debate and add to the growing discourse

    The Energy Access Practitioner Network It s led by the UN Foundation is a network of networks bringing together practitioners and institutions working on household and community level electrification incorporating innovative financial and business models in predominantly market based applications supporting improved income generation health agriculture education small business and telecommunications outcomes The Network s particular focus is on the removal of market barriers to the effective delivery of energy services as well as the identification and dissemination of best practices and advocacy for universal energy access What is the report about This report is a set of recommendations based on international on the ground experience to provide electricity to the 1 3 billion people who still lack it The report focuses primarily on micro and off grid electricity solutions for households and communities Members of the Practitioner Network who prepared the report say five areas are of particular importance understanding the market improving policy and regulatory frameworks facilitating finance advancing mini and micro grids and improving standards and testing The report will inform governments investors the private sector civil society organizations social enterprises the United Nations and policymakers about the policy shifts and innovative business models that are needed
