    needs in smallholder agriculture Posted on 30 Apr 2014 16 12 Publication Tags Energy access Both food and energy are high on the development agenda Both sectors share similar challenges such as achieving access to food and energy for everyone while producing and consuming resources more sustainably The interconnectedness of food and energy systems is widely recognised One area however receives less attention than it deserves the energy needs of smallholder farmers and the enterprises that process store and distribute farmers produce The bulk of food in developing countries is produced by smallholder farms which are home to two billion people many smallholders are poor undernourished and marginalised There is a huge deficit in access to modern energy services for these farmers In particular in sub Saharan Africa 65 per cent of farm power relies on human effort 25 per cent on animals and only 10 per cent on engines FAO unIDO 2008 Addressing food security requires upgrades throughout the value chain from food production to retail which implies more demand for modern energy and equipment Click here to read the full report Share this page GVEP Publications We produce a wide range of publications including studies reports guides and

    access to mobile and access to utility services GSM coverage now reaches up to 84 of the population in developing countries In GSMA s new report Sizing the Opportunity of Mobile to Support Energy and Water Access the Mobile Enabled Community Services team estimates that hundreds of millions of people living in emerging markets are currently covered by mobile networks but without access to electricity or clean water The size and the reach of the mobile industry s infrastructure distribution channels mobile payments and technologies already offer innovative pathways to achieve reliable energy access and increased water access for underserved communities The energy and water addressable markets the number of people who have GSM coverage but do not have access to the electricity grid or improved water sources is highlighted in our key findings Energy Access The total addressable market for mobile enabled energy access is more than 643 million people in 2013 or 53 of the global population without access to the electricity grid approximately 1 2 billion people the largest addressable market is Sub Saharan Africa where the reach of electricity networks remains limited but mobile coverage reaches more than 74 of the population Mobile enabled services such as Pay As You Go could be most impactful in this region where barriers to affordable clean energy solutions are high Water Access The total addressable market for mobile enabled water access is estimated at approximately 262 million people in 2013 or 34 of the global population without access to improved water sources approximately 780 million people As for energy the majority of the water addressable population lives in Sub Saharan Africa approximately 125 million people In South Asia and Latin America where significant progress has been made for improved water access the opportunity of mobile enabled water services is
