    April GVEP Advisory Services supports companies in East Africa secure the grant debt and equity capital required to implement or scale up In addition to supporting the development of financing strategies GVEP facilitates introductions to relevant investors As a result of its relationship with Pymwymic a premier impact investment network in the Netherlands GVEP introduced a number of clients as candidates for the Impact Days Pitching Competition in early April The competition generated tremendous interest and the conference organizers ultimately selected 12 entrepreneurs from over 100 applicants in a wide range of sectors A testament to the quality of the GVEP supported businesses two were offered the opportunity to pitch at the Amsterdam conference and one will be attending The other company has elected not to attend as it is negotiations with other investors which were introduced by GVEP JUMEME a joint venture between experienced mini grids project developers INENSUS and TerraProjects together with St Augustine University in Tanzania is seeking to finance a large scale roll out of solar hybrid mini grids in Tanzania Nico Peterschmidt CEO of INENSUS will be presenting the investment opportunity to hundreds of active impact investors in attendance and we are hopeful this will

    cookstove sector in Uganda Discussions were held on forming new partnerships and joint ventures for resource mobilization standards testing and product development market development and communication Members deliberated on the most appropriate ways to secure further public and private engagement and presentations were given on internal structures and processes of the represented organisations GVEP International is recognized as an important development partner in the renewable energy sector and a leader on project delivery Having recruited hundreds of energy entrepreneurs in programmes focussing on developing sustainable value chains in order to benefit both cookstove suppliers and retailers as well as guaranteeing access to modern affordable and clean renewable energy for millions of people It is on this basis that GVEP was approached to share their expertise in setting up the National Alliance Joel Essien an SME advisor representing GVEP at the meeting speaks of the expected outcomes from the collaboration Over the course of the year I hope to see GVEP further strengthen its leverage in the national cookstove sector and also continue to contribute positively as the lead on the distribution and market development task force for the advantage of the entrepreneurs we support This will involve close interactions with

  • Cooking the better way – making improved cookstoves available to families in Kenya | GVEP International
    and sells efficient firewood cookstoves to households in rural and peri urban Kenya at subsidised prices The aim of the agreement is to to facilitate energy access to women in the rural parts of Kenya It is a cooperative sales and marketing effort utilising Paradigm s range of cookstoves GVEP International and WEDI s networks to create new opportunities for the local market Under this arrangement Paradigm s role includes supplying energy cookstoves to WEDI who in turn supply the cookstoves to the end users who are group members or energy entrepreneurs of WEDI They accept orders based on 30 down payment received from WEDI and ensure the stoves are supplied once the money is received The remaining 70 is paid within 90 days through three equal monthly installments In addition Paradigm provides training to WEDI staff on proper stove usage trouble shooting and warranty issues James Mwiiri of Paradigm Kenya explains This was an attractive arrangement to us for a variety of reasons We work with a network of distributors and some have a hard time presenting capital upfront and GVEP s guarantee provides a solution In addition we are able to reach a wider market through WEDI s network of members and expanding operation is good for business growth He also adds that the value and benefit to the end users support Paradigm s ethos The efficiency of the stoves enables users to save at least 50 on fuel says James That means less fuel wood is need and less time spent collecting it Customers also enjoy the portability something they cannot easily get with a 3 stone fire and the stoves also reduce toxic emissions by up to 75 WEDI s obligations include availing its officers for training retailing the cookstoves to its members at between KES1 700 2 600 USD 20 30 depending on the type of stove managing the groups payback and provide accurate records In addition WEDI also receives KES 50 for every carbon form filled We ve had a good and effective relationship with GVEP says Jamleck Mugo WEDI s Director We are empowering women and we welcome opportunities to further pursue that goal By joining this arrangement we were able to ensure that the cookstoves can be provided to our members in a way that is affordable to them What encouraged us to join is the success we have had so far in a similar agreement with GVEP on solar lanterns Between September 2012 to date WEDI has sold approximately 1 700 improved cookstoves a mixture of Jiko Poa Envirofit M 5000 Envirofit G3300 and the Easy Stove Aside from bringing all partners together GVEP s role in this arrangement has been to sign a partnership agreement where GVEP commits to cover 50 of the balance of cookstoves purchased by WEDI with WEDI covering the other 20 in the event of a default In such cases Paradigm is able to recover the funds from the guarantee placed by GVEP s Capital Access

  • A community hydroponic farming project with solar energy in Jamaica boosted by the IDEAS Competition | GVEP International
    small farmers in the community The greenhouses will help the community grow various herbs using hydroponics which will then be sold to hotels restaurants and supermarkets Photovoltaic panels will also be installed to power the pumps which circulate the nutrient mixture used for hydroponics The family run business started in September 2011 with one greenhouse Since being awarded 71 924 thus far through the IDEAS Contest two additional greenhouses have been built in the family s property another four have been built in the land of three other families in the community as well as one the community s primary school The company has been able to hire ten employees both full and part time and is looking to hire more in 2013 So far 4kW of Photovoltaic systems have been installed on some of the greenhouses with more expected in the coming months The company has already been able to harvest some of their produce and the community is already benefitting from the initiative Kirmeth Johnson one of the Farm Hands is also grateful to be able to earn a living where he lives I no longer have to leave the community to find work he says and this is a great benefit for me and my family The project participants and the wider community have acquired new skill and knowledge through the training workshops which have been held on the mechanics of hydroponic farming Leighton Waterman the GVEP Caribbean Project Manager who s been working alongside with the Contest winners explains that in addition to the grant funding the IDEAS winners receive technical and business development support to implement or scale up their ideas The goal is to enable them to turn their ideas into financially sustainable businesses helping solve the energy problems facing the region New businesses

  • GVEP marks the end of its Developing Energy Enterprises Project in East Africa | GVEP International
    of 4 million Euros together with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sessions included presentations by IT Power Eastern Africa GVEP s implementing partner that offered technology training to the entrepreneurs enrolled in DEEP Participants were given a sense of how DEEP s strategy at management levels translated into on the ground implementation This was done through sessions facilitated by GVEP s Regional Business Mentors RBM and Business Development Services Coordinators BDSC who gave illustrations on field activities at each stage of DEEP s life span Also taking an active role during the workshops was a selection of DEEP entrepreneurs eight in Kenya six in Uganda and five in Tanzania respectively representing improved cookstoves briquettes and solar technologies The entrepreneurs had a one hour session to speak about their businesses including the benefits they have experienced through DEEP They also highlighted challenges they had experienced over the years and ways to overcome them This session was a particular highlight of the workshop said George Theuri one of GVEP s Regional Business Mentors based in Kenya I enjoyed hearing their stories and it was exhilarating to hear how this work has made an actual difference in their businesses and lives In Kampala the keynote address was made by Mr Godfrey Ndawula the Assistant Commissioner for New and Renewable Sources of Energy in the Government of Uganda s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development MEMD Through an informative and interesting presentation to over 60 participants he concluded that the role of government with regard to the renewable energy industry is to align its functionaries into provision of incentives guarantees to enable investment The workshop was also attended by Uganda s State Minister for Environment the Honorable M Flavia Nabugere The theme of your workshop is one that goes to the heart of

  • Prof Abeeku Brew-Hammond passes away | GVEP International
    We are very sad to announce the death of Professor Abeeku Brew Hammond on Monday 25 March 2013 Abeeku was the very first GVEP Manager from 2003 to 2007 back when GVEP was hosted by Practical Action in their Rugby office in the UK Abeeku was a very inspiring and cheerful person very passionate about his work and it was a real pleasure to work with him He was the founder and first director of KITE a Ghana based NGO with a regional outlook specialising in energy policy project development and knowledge management He was also a lecturer an associate professor and director of The Energy Centre TEC at the College of Engineering of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology KNUST in Ghana Abeeku was also Board Chairman for the Energy Commission of Ghana as well as a member of the Technical Group under the UN Secretary General s High Level Group on Sustainable Energy for All SE4All He was also a widely published author One of his recent contributions was for the Energy Access Scenarios to 2030 for the Power Sector in Sub Saharan Africa Abeeku has greatly contributed to the development of our organisation and he

  • GVEP celebrates success of its Developing Energy Enterprises Project (DEEP) in East Africa | GVEP International
    at Nairobi Serena Hotel from 8am 3pm 22 February 2013 at the Kampala Protea Hotel from 8am 3pm 26 February 2013 at the Dar es Salaam Protea Oyster Bay Hotel from 8am 3pm Present at the one day event will be key stakeholders from government donor agencies private and public sectors NGOs and a sample of small scale entrepreneurs who all made a success of this project The workshop will also be an opportunity to learn more about GVEP s current and future activities within the renewable energy sector in Kenya Uganda and Tanzania Spanning five years DEEP has focused on supporting micro small and medium enterprises MSMEs in the renewable energy sector primarily in rural areas throughout East Africa where access to modern energy is still a challenge DEEP has been a Euro 4 million project jointly funded by the European Union EU and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs DGIS under the African Caribbean and Pacific ACP EU Energy Facility The project has helped deliver energy access to 4 million people in Kenya Tanzania and Uganda since it began operations in March 2008 DEEP has supported local East African entrepreneurs working in renewable energy technologies including improved cookstoves biomass briquettes a cleaner alternative to charcoal solar PV products biogas and the value chains around these businesses GVEP provided business and technology training and access to appropriate enterprise financing that have contributed to support the growth of over 900 enterprises and created approximately 3 000 jobs in the region Though DEEP comes to an end GVEP pursues its efforts to increase access to energy in the East African region by supporting the growth of local energy enterprises In September 2012 we launched a new three year programme called Capital Access for Renewable Energy Enterprises CARE2 which will improve the
