    supports the Ashden Awards Week for 2008 Winners This has also been a very active time for the collaborative agreement between GVEP International and the Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy Our Partnership Meetings coincided with the Ashden Awards Winners Week for 2008 GVEP International offers ongoing support to Ashden Awards winners both through technical assistance and business development support such as was provided to the 2007 winner Mohamedrafik Parpia from ZaraSolar who received business plan development assistance To kick start support for the new winners Kavita Rai Programme Manager Hari Natarajan South Asia Manager and Mahesh Gohill East Africa Manager ran a brainstorming session with the finalists allowing them to share their experiences and learn from one another They also carried out one to one sessions with the winners to identify areas where the Ashden Awards GVEP International and other partners can provide support to enable further success and scale up of their projects Sarah Adams GVEP International CEO is a judge for the Ashden Awards International prizes Our Partnership Board and members of the Advisory Groups all attended the Ashden Awards Ceremony on Thursday evening at the Royal Geographical Society where speakers included Dr Wangari Maathai and Sir David

  • The Developing Energy Enterprise Project (DEEP) | GVEP International
    objective of DEEP is to enable development of a sustainable and widespread industry of micro and small energy enterprises providing energy services and employment in rural and peri urban areas of Kenya Uganda and Tanzania í The programme will be rolled out over the next five years and aims to achieve the following targets Initiation of 1 800 micro and small East African energy enterprises MSEs which have diversified into energy service provision 300 business mentors trained and qualified to be employed in rural and peri urban areas of East Africa addressing and ensuring sustainability issues Supported businesses to have employed 1300 people directly and through provision of energy services enabled the creation of a further 1300 employment opportunities in the rural and peri urban communities which they serve 12 000 rural and peri urban community members provided with services The GVEP International led initiative brings together private sector expertise community mobilisation and business management in the development of private businesses from their inception as ideas in villages to established energy service providers and employers The programme will be run by our local partners and by a locally sourced GVEP International East African regional manager In such a way programme

  • MEM Coordination Platform in Peru | GVEP International
    in particular with the support of GTZ and IDB In May 2008 representatives from the government private sector NGOs and academia came together in Tacna Peru to participate in the GVEP International regional workshop to discuss the proposed strategy and raise awareness around renewables The input from this workshop will be fed back into the national strategy as it is developed Speaking at the close of the meeting Pedro Aita Gamio the Vice Minister for Energy and Minerals told attendees After many efforts to reach consensus between all actors finally thanks to the comprehensive logistical and methodological support of GVEP International the Peruvian government was able to develop strategic and operational plans for renewables and biofuels to be implemented at national and regional levels The Inter American Development Bank IDB spokesperson Pablo Rosenthal described the GVEP International Platform as a highly effective method for establishing a sustainable multi sector strategy The model has been so successful that we are receiving requests to replicate it in a number of other Latin American countries beginning with Honduras Colombia Guatemala and Panama Bringing together many diverse GVEP International partners the meetings also enabled the sharing of interests experiences expert knowledge and business concepts

  • GVEP International reveals its strategy for supporting sustainable energy access at the Asia Clean Energy Forum | GVEP International
    Clean Energy Forum at ADB in Manila June 2008 Hari Natarajan GVEP International s South Asia Regional Manager presented its roadmap for interventions in the Asia Pacific region during a pre conference one day session on scaling up Energy Access as a part of the Asia Clean Energy Forum at ADB in Manila Proposed interventions at the regional level included the possible establishment of an energy access fund similar in principle to the fund under development for East Africa a capacity building facility and a Monitoring Evaluation facility This will be supplemented by global interventions such as strategic partnerships with other agencies for example the Ashden Awards Trust and REEEP The aim is to address technology innovation and policy issues as well as develop an information base for knowledge sharing and collaboration As in the past GVEP International also provided the grass root level organization perspective at this event by supporting a few of its partners to attend Partner feedback Attending the ACEF gave me an opportunity to exchange ideas and get my doubts clarified with practioners in energy sector from other parts of the world This has provided a small beginning for a collective effort with other people organisations

    to the meeting With over 35 participants including a wide range of government ministries development agencies NGOs private sector and academia there was overwhelming agreement on the critical need for coordination in this key sector Honduras is a country which is feeling the full effects of Climate Change through increased cyclone activity and numerous tropical storms and there is an ever growing awareness of the importance of developing a common strategy towards renewable energies and energy efficiency Full support for the GVEP International initiative was expressed by the government World Bank GTZ USAID associations of small renewable energy producers and networks representing NGOs Steven Stone Country Representative for the IDB in Honduras opened the meeting and underlined the importance of renewable energies for the IDB which has just announced the commitment of US 500 million to renewables initiatives in Honduras Read More Sarah Adams CEO of GVEP International then presented the organisationís new programmes and current projects in Honduras and Pablo Rosenthal Senior Advisor to the IDB on secondment from GTZ presented the IDBís SECCI Sustainable Energy and Climate Change Initiative as well as the Peru GVEP International Coordination Platform for Renewables and Biofuels which is led by the Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mines and supported by IDB and GTZ Marta Rivera from Fondacion Solar presented the gap analysis and ìrichnessî maps carried out in Guatemala and Diana Solis from PIR Rural Investment Programme presented GVEPís previous activities in Honduras since 2003 Finally Marlon Pineda from the Federacion de Organizaciones para el Desarollo de Honduras FOPRIDEH described the activities of the existing GVEP Honduras working Group and the need for the consolidation of a national Coordination Platform After a lively discussion around the leadership and activities of the Platform it was decided to carry out a mapping of existing

    from innovative local businesses In fact the government s energy programmes have so far failed to reach India s most needy communities some of whom pay five times as much city dwellers for power generated from dirty fuels like kerosene and diesel According to A M Devendranath of Feedback Consulting India the private sector which has played a vital role in developing sectors like IT and telecommunications in the past will be instrumental in supplying green energy to remote communities in the future Entrepreneurs are already coming up with new ways to supply electricity he says Devendranath cites a recent project in the state of Bihar as a great example of locally developed green energy initiative There many young entrepreneurs are coming with innovative business models to reach offgrid areas to supply Electricity through Renewable Energy for e g A young team of Engineers educated in the West have set up 23 husk based distributed power plants supplying power to nearly 50 villages in the last 2 years and plans to scale up to 200 villages by the next year There are many private entrepreneurs who are willing to come forward and work in this space but it requires some

  • Innovations could bring growth to the renewable energy framework and reduce poverty in Honduras | GVEP International
    too remote to be linked to the national electricity grid The pico hydropower franchising project will generate run of the river hydro electricity By using partial ownership and a franchising model maintenance will be provided and the potential for theft reduced Employees will gain partial owner status and receive additional income from profits Focussed on expansion and replicability it is expected that the project will create 240 energy franchises and over 100 jobs whilst supplying 72 000 houses with power over the next five years The second winning project seeks to establish micro finance services to enable micro enterprises in the Yeguare region of Honduras to supply install and maintain their own renewable energy systems It is expected that 300 families in nine municipalities totalling 1 500 people will benefit from the renewable energy power services Eventually these rural small and medium enterprises will develop both supply and demand for renewable energies and provide small loans to finance the acquisition of further green energy systems The IDEAS Innovation Contest is jointly sponsored by GVEP International GTZ the Inter American Development Bank and the Korean government When it was launched in March last year it generated more than 1000 proposals from
