    of local heroes who gave their lives for our freedom in a granite slab The Atascadero Veterans Memorial Foundation worked for over two years to build a memorial to recognize the 23 000 local service members The memorial also has flags representing the various branches of the military and an 8 foot sculpture by Atascadero artist Mark Greenway depicting local soldiers from World War I to the War on Terror Noteworthy Outcomes Honoring Our Veterans The Faces of Freedom Memorial is recognized on the Purple Heart Trail that was created as a symbolic and honorary system of roads highways bridges and other monuments across the country that give tribute to the men and women who have been awarded the Purple Heart medal Educating Youth The Foundation believes the Memorial is about our future as it will be used to teach our youth about our nation s core values and will serve as a symbol of our gratitude to those who through their service and by their sacrifice put their country first Community Unification Reminiscent of a barn raising the effort to bring the vision of the memorial to a reality required the efforts of many and became a source of pride for all A thank you letter doesn t come close to being able to express our gratitude for your very generous donation that literally put the Veteran Memorial project over the top You stepped up to help the Foundation when we needed it most to insure that the Faces of Freedom Veterans memorial would be built by Veterans day 2008 You have helped make a dream become reality for our Veterans Colonel William J Hatch US Army RET Chairman Atascadero Veterans Memorial Foundation Return to Search Area of Funding Historical Landmark Restoration Type of Funding Standard Grant Amount Funded

    and tower were not visible due to fog Piedras Blancas Light Station Association provides support for the upkeep and restoration of the lighthouse maintains historical research records provides skilled landscape restoration and conduct tours to help fund its rebirth The Piedras Blancas Light Station site is composed of several significant buildings the Light House 1875 Fuel and Storage Building 1907 Fog Signal Building 1906 Barn and a Victorian Cottage Noteworthy Outcomes Successful Case Study Even before construction is completed the progress at the signal building serves as an effective case study to show that dedicated funds are being used as expected and will encourage other potential supporters to contribute to other rehabilitation projects at the station Revenue Generation The Fog Signal Building is an important interpretive feature but after completion it will be a historically significant facility that create revenue by hosting special events Even though the project is only partially complete it is still an important interpretive feature on the Station s tour And once completed this project will be an impressive interpretive feature that will generate revenue by hosting special events and its success will encourage additional donor support for other rehabilitation projects at the Light Station Jim

    Park s Beauty Ranch are the winery ruins The winery ruins are located immediately northwest of the cottage where Jack London often wrote The winery was constructed sometime in the 1870 s The upper portions of the building were destroyed by the 1906 earthquake After Jack and Charmian London bought the parcel containing the ruins in May 1911 they constructed a carriage house on the remaining stone portion of the winery The carriage house had six guest rooms on one side and rooms for ranch workers on the other The carriage house burned down in 1965 portions of the walls withstood the fire Following a comprehensive stabilization plan in 2013 which included investigation of masonry conditions and structural deficiencies VMNHA determined the restoration project was ciritical to preventing further deterioritation of the historic winery ruin walls The Hind Foundation s grant ensures as much of the historic fabric as possible will be retained preventing future failures of masonry structurally stabilizing the walls and providing a capping system to prevent further deterioration Noteworthy Outcomes Working Together Restoring this historic property will continue to bring volunteers and community members together to maintain the grounds for years to come Ongoing removal and prevention of biological growth such as weeds grasses and other shallow rooted plants will be performed by volunteers on a seasonal basis Sharing A Life Well Lived Jack London State Historic Park was established in 1959 to memorialize the world famous author whose literary work has brought inspiration to millions of people The park encompasses 1 400 acres and also includes the House of Happy Walls built by Charmian as an eventual memorial to Jack It now serves as the park s visitor center and includes many artifacts and momentos that attest to his literary successes and their adventurous lifestyle Return
