  • L.A. County Board of Supervisors takes bold step to reduce chronic homelessness
homelessness and mental illness are far more likely to have greater contact with law enforcement including being on parole or probation as a result of life on the street disability or substance abuse and addiction Often the offenses which would exclude them from obtaining a voucher are non violent Studies have shown that criminal history is not a predictor for future housing stability for homeless adults living with disability in fact when they get supportive housing with health mental health and drug treatment services 85 percent of people who are chronically homeless stay permanently housed Modifying the eligibility standards for homeless applicants will allow homeless individuals most in need of housing to obtain a voucher and get off the streets Before the 4 1 vote people on parole or probation simply could not qualify for a Section 8 voucher What the Board did was remove that automatic ban for people applying for a voucher set aside for homeless individuals and families The HACoLA Section 8 voucher eligibility criteria also forbids admission to the program for anyone who has engaged in criminal activity during the three years prior to admission the Board of Supervisors voted to reduce this criminal look back period to two years for the homeless set aside program Let s put this in perspective The County Housing Authority has around 22 000 vouchers available approximately 3 to 4 percent of which are set aside for homeless families and individuals Some cities such as New York Portland and Seattle do much more 15 or more for homeless families but that s another story Individuals and families who have a voucher from this set aside are offered services to help them retain their housing For anybody who s been working to fix chronic homelessness in Los Angeles there s no debate That s why it s in the 2012 update of the Home for Good action plan which was signed by three members of the LA County Board of Supervisors and dozens of other local elected and community leaders The policy change does not give priority to felons and parolees over other needy people Instead it simply removes a barrier that was making it difficult for some of the County s most vulnerable residents chronically homeless people to find a permanent home Instead of fighting about who deserves Section 8 more we need to unite around the goal of how to use it better to reduce chronic homelessness That s a much better idea than letting people who are trying to put their criminal past behind them fall back through the cracks and back into our criminal justice system Leave a Reply Cancel reply Send Us Message Full Name Email Address Website Message You may use these HTML tags and attributes a href title abbr title acronym title b blockquote cite cite code del datetime em i q cite s strike strong SEND MESSAGE About H ome For Good is an Action Plan to end chronic and veteran homelessness in

  • United Way
over 300 members of the public private nonprofit business government faith and philanthropic sectors in attendance the Business Leaders Task Force on Homelessness celebrated Home for Good s Year One achievements and the official launch of Year Two Watch the video below for some highlights from the day s events Payday Loans In Pendleton Oregon unsecured loans in indianapolis Venice Beach Regulars Painting The Unseen Faces Around Us by Stuart Perlman April 24 2012 By admin Home for Good News United Way cash america payday loans I decided to start painting seriously about five years ago when my father died I thought that if he could die then I had better start doing things I really wanted to do now at age 54 before I died I wanted to paint people who showed great depth of experience and something with a powerful social message Since I live near the beach and was confronted with the homeless on a daily basis I thought I would turn something upsetting into something that was an adventure I wanted to do something that combined two of my loves painting and psychoanalysis I m a psychologist and psychoanalyst in private practice in West Los Angeles I found that these people that I tried hard to avoid and wished would go away were some of the most interesting people I ve ever met in my life many loving kind accomplished people who had experienced deep traumas and misfortunes It made me want to find ways to reach out and help them and give them a hand on the way back Their life stories which I have collected as I have painted their portraits on location at Venice Beach are compelling and profound I had truly been judging the book by its cover There are homeless who want to be without responsibility and have chosen to live this lifestyle but I believe they are a small minority I hope by telling these people s stories both by painting them and by collecting their histories poems and art that others can see how valuable these human beings are who we as a society are throwing away I have painted 60 portraits oil on canvas 18 x 24 I hope after seeing my exhibition that you will never look at a homeless person the same way again Many times when I go home at night after painting I feel like crying and feel guilty because I leave behind some people who have become dear friends of mine They remain in their lives of desperation and I go back to my beautiful home wife and children with a refrigerator filled to the brim So many of these peoples stories have touched my heart Something that has stood out to me is how many veterans and former foster care children are part of the homeless A group that touched me deeply is a number of men whose beloved wives died These men just walked away from their children and middle class
