    her passing through two auctions The Partnership has been a significant resource for returning her original belongings to the collections Our preliminary estimates indicate at this time that approximately 60 of the furnishings on exhibit are original to the cottage The remaining 40 represent some very important pieces that bear great historical significance The Acquisition Fund enables rapid response as pieces are rediscovered and before and when they come to market Eleanor s Sleeping Porch As She Enjoyed It FUNDED Thanks to a generous grant from The Muriel F Siebert Foundation The sleeping porch was an extension of Mrs Roosevelt s bedroom She was known to use it frequently in all seasons and she reflects on it numerous times over the years in her My Day columns as a major source of inspiration and delight The year round environmental conditions present on the sleeping porch are too detrimental to original Val Kill collections As an important reference for Mrs Roosevelt time at Val Kill and its location on the present tour route the Partnership wishes to support reproductions or replacement pieces that display the room fully furnished as Mrs Roosevelt enjoyed it The Garden Room in Stone Cottage This Garden Room will serve as a venue for small seminar style gatherings and interpretive programming within Stone Cottage The Partnership will support the upcoming acquisition of Val Kill Industries style furniture which will enable an intimate setting and authentic feel for programming directly adjacent to the new exhibits Eleanor Roosevelt Val Kill Emergence of a Political Leader LANDSCAPE TREATMENT PLAN RESTORING THE HISTORIC LANDSCAPE The Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site in collaboration with the Olmsted Center for Landscape Preservation and SUNY College of Environmental Forestry recently adopted a landscape treatment plan to preserve and enhance the historic character of the landscape of Val Kill The aim is to support a treatment philosophy that reflects the landscape as it had developed by the late 1950s at the height of Eleanor Roosevelt s life at Val Kill Reestablish Val Kill Swimming Pool The swimming pool the second one constructed at Val Kill was jointly financed by FDR Eleanor Marion and Nancy The pool is a central feature of the historic setting used by the family and was a primary gathering place Home video 16mm film footage records the Roosevelts and their friends and guests swimming in this pool as seen in the new Stone Cottage Exhibits FDR is seen here playing rambunctiously This is likely where Earl Miller taught Eleanor to dive a skill she was keen to master Winston Churchill swam in this pool where he bounced in the water like a rubber ball and drank whisky according to Marion Dickerman Reestablishment of the Val Kill pool will include enhancement and fortification to the original pool edges and the installation of a shallow bottom which will allow the pool to be once again filled with water as it was in the Roosevelts time Pool Terrace Furnishings Reproductions Furnishings around the pool will

    2 it addressed the disparity of feminist thinking on economic institutions 3 it addressed the changing conceptions of gender race class and sexuality in the economy The Partnership was a proud co sponsor of the conference Our NPS partner curator Frank Futral contributed to the conference by drawing connections between Eleanor and some of the relevant early ideas in this area Val Kill warmly welcomes participants back to the site for a tour of the new Stone Cottage exhibits and a special dinner on site More details here Following In Her Footsteps Awards 2015 Recipients Swanee Hunt Barbara Lee Liz Walker Learn More About Our Awards Here 2nd Annual Eleanor s Circle Reception with Jill Abramson and Patricia Duff Second Annual Eleanor s Circle thought leaders membership group dedicated to Eleanor Roosevelt s ideals in our time took place on Wednesday December 3 2014 in New York City Featured Guest Jill Abramson With an Introduction by Patricia Duff Keeping the Dream Alive June 1 August 1 2014 National Student Art Exhibit On Eleanor s Civil Rights Leadership On Display at the Wallace Center Summer 2014 In collaboration with the Dreamrocket Project the Val Kill Partnership sponsored an art exhibit which drew the participation of close to 1 000 students nationwide Teachers worked with students to interpret Eleanor s civil rights leadership through art and the incredible results were exhibited this summer at the Wallace Center and were also highlighted at the NPS s annual Teaching the Hudson Valley summer institute The project brought young people closer to Eleanor Roosevelt s legacy Picnic Diplomacy Celebration Opens the Stone Cottage Exhibits The opening of the new Stone Cottage Exhibits marked a significant milestone in our public private partnership with the National Park Service and we could not be more proud of the results Over 200 guests joined us to reanimate Val Kill the way Eleanor and Franklin most loved to enjoy it with friends family community and world leaders alike Dr Phumzile Mlambo Ngcuka gave a phenomenal testament to Eleanor s ideals in our time and the afternoon mirrored the wonderful picnic diplomacy celebrated in the new Exhibits Topping off the day s festivities were the culinary delights of Chefs Consortium bringing the original Val Kill Industries support of local agriculture to new heights and enjoyment by all Eleanor Roosevelt and Val Kill Emergence of a Political Leader takes an in depth study of the early years of Val Kill when Eleanor Roosevelt joined a group of independent minded women dedicated to shaping politics and social policy New work and new expectations ignited a stirring friendship with political activists Nancy Cook and Marion Dickerman Together at Val Kill they created jobs steered party politics and advanced social reform Living and working at Val Kill was the start of Eleanor s personal journey Driven by a spirit of curiosity and determination she emerged as one of world s most influential women The National Park Service wishes to thank Exhibit Benefactors Lia and William
