  • FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Navajo Times reprints outdated article, NHA requests correction
    Grant Funds we are concerned when outdated stories are reprinted because it may mislead the public on the current events and situation regarding the issue In NHA s 2016 1 st Quarter Newsletter which was inserted into the Feb 4 2016 edition of the Navajo Times NHA provides the most recent updates regarding the Navajo Nation s Indian Housing Block Grant Funds NHA 1 st Quarter Newsletter NHA meets 2016 Appropriations Undisbursed Funds Language 3x language deadline NHA continuously monitors all congressional actions that may potential impact the level of federal housing funding allocated to the Navajo Nation said Mellor Willie NHA Advisor on Government Affairs Unfortunately in December the Congress pass the full year 2016 omnibus funding bill that contained language targeted at addressing unspent Indian Housing Block Grant Funds and more specifically the Navajo Housing Authority However we knew back in June 2015 that this language could potentially pass Congress and therefore NHA leadership was prepared to ensure that the organization would bring down it s unspent funds balance so that there was little to no impact The language in question is known as the Three Times Language 3X and aims to withhold funds from a tribe s future Indian Housing Block Grant allocation amount if that tribe s current balance is not below three time its current allocation The language took effect on Jan 1 2016 We will not know NHA s final IHBG allocation for fiscal 2016 until March of this year and this is what makes it difficult to know exactly if NHA will be impacted by the three times language said Aneva J Yazzie NHA Chief Executive Officer However we have taken precautionary measure to ensure that NHA s IHBG fund balance is much lower than three times the projected IHBG allocation for fiscal

  • FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - NHA awards $ 21.4M to Chinle Nursing Home to build 120-bed care facility
    the amount 21 448 516 to the CNH representing NHA s contribution toward the construction of the new facility This facility will serve as a home away from home for our Navajo elders said NHA Board Chairman Ervin Chavez The support of facilities like the CNH ensures that our Navajo elders have best care that s close to home and the NHA Board is looking forward to future projects like this On Sept 5 the NHA board unanimously approved a resolution that granted the CNH 21 448 516 million in NHA s equity funds to fund 75 percent of the care facility s construction cost with remaining amount to be committed by the Navajo Nation or other funding sources CNH CEO Wayne Claw was thankful for the support of NHA I m really thankful of NHA they do a lot and sometimes people don t realize it but it takes time because a lot of the money has to go through the government and they have so much rules people need to understand that you can t do things over night its been 11 years that I ve been working on this project said Claw Claw is excited of the progress and expects to have design plans completed by 2016 with construction completed by 2018 The design is to include 3 floors the first and second floor will have two separate wings for men and women with 30 rooms in each wing for a total of 120 rooms The third floor will house administration offices and to complete the design the center of the facility will feature a Hogan design with windows facing eastward for patients to enjoy said Claw Currently the CNH provides level 1 2 care and those elderly patients that are more severe and require level 3

  • FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - NHA Board approves Veterans Housing Assistance Program Policy, Annual housing plan to include $ 3M for veterans housing
    in Albuquerque New Mexico on Nov 20 With the guidance of our oversight committee the Navajo Nation Council Resources and Development Committee RDC as well as input from the Department of Navajo Veterans Affairs DNVA and other Veterans organizations the NHA Board and management are pleased to have this new policy for the benefit of our Navajo veterans Chavez added Also contained in the resolution was the authorization of 3 million to be included in the Indian Housing Plan IHP each year for the use of veteran housing and housing related services The VHAP policy was developed in response to the Navajo Nation Council s RDC Resolution passed on June 16 which directed the NHA to further develop a veteran s housing program to give priority to all honorably discharged Navajo veterans for affordable housing activities to include rental and homeownership by mortgage including free homes to honorably discharged Navajo veterans Since then NHA has been collaborating with the RDC and the DNVA along with a few other Navajo veterans organization discussing ways in which the NHA can lawfully provide housing and housing related services to Navajo Veterans and still comply within the limitations regarding the use of IHBG funds in accordance with the regulations of the Native American Housing and Self Determination Act NAHSADA Based on numerous meetings with RDC and other organizations and the comments received concerning the NHA s proposed VHAP policy the NHA Board of Commissioners and management completed the VHAP policy which was approved on Nov 20 Among some of the significant benefits of the policy include A separate waiting list maintained by the NHA specifically for veterans New provisions where selected applicants whose income is below 80 percent of the area median income AMI based on the Housing and Urban Development HUD income limits
