  • Become a Volunteer - Horton's Kids
    Kids provides volunteers with transportation to and from the Center Volunteers can choose to engage with youth during one of the following weekly programs Life Skills Mondays from 5 30 7 00 pm Join Horton s Kids older youth staff as they work with participants on building various life skills they will need to be successful in college career and beyond Botvin curriculum lessons and other activities address topics such as communication conflict resolution drug abuse prevention time management goal setting financial management and more Rap Sessions Wednesdays from 5 30 7 30 pm Help facilitate Rap Sessions in which staff and volunteers lead the youth in group discussions on important issues that affect the youth s daily lives and futures Discussion themes have included the media s influence on personal values domestic violence racial stereotypes defining manhood and police brutality among others Mentoring Program for Older Youth Based on your potential strengths as a mentor and the needs of the youth we will pair you with a mentee with whom you can have a meaningful and lasting one on one mentorship In order to have the greatest impact on your mentee Horton s Kids asks that you commit to the following Attend a mentor training Mentor for at least one year Spend time with your mentee at least once a month Talk to your mentee on the phone at least once a week Homework Help Horton s Kids offers homework help sessions Monday Thursday at the Community Resource Center Volunteers work with children and youth in all subjects to help them understand assignments prepare for tests and improve their study skills Horton s Kids offers separate sessions for K 6 th graders and 7 th 12 th graders as follows K 6 th Grade Monday Thursday from 4 00 5 30 pm 7 th 12 th Grade Monday 4 00 5 30 and 7 15 8 30 pm Wednesday 4 00 5 30 and 7 15 8 30 pm Thursday 4 00 6 00 pm Weekend Enrichment On Saturdays and Sundays Horton s Kids offers field trips in the DC metro area and enrichment activities such as cooking classes gardening and organized sports in the Community Resource Center in Anacostia Grade levels vary based on the activity Volunteers receive a monthly email with upcoming events and can sign up for the activities of their choice Start Volunteering Today Attend an upcoming orientation Each orientation includes an overview of the organization provides additional details on volunteer opportunities and provides an optional training for those who are interested in becoming tutors Submit a Volunteer Application Horton s Kids offers notary and fingerprinting services for anyone who brings a completed volunteer application to the orientation Potential volunteers can also submit the application at a later time However to ensure the children s safety a completed application is required before starting as a volunteer Join a Program After receiving all completed paperwork Horton s Kids pairs each volunteer with a program During the
