    Professor S Nirenberg and Dr C Pandarinath of Cornell University s Weill Medical College in New York City In essence these researchers have created a model of the mouse retina that can process natural scenes including landscapes faces people and cars in motion etc by a combination of electronic circuits computation algorithms and machine learning methods in such a way that the visual scenes are encoded in the appropriate form of electrical signals action potentials normally sent by the output neurons of the retina retinal ganglion cells and which are expected and readily interpreted by the brain In other words this artificial retina model a black box in engineering parlance simulates the function of the normal retina up to the stage of output by the retinal ganglion cells to the brain The significance of this achievement building the retinal encoder in functional restoration research is analogous to breaking the enemy s secret code for transmitting radio messages during war times Inside this black box there are two main components the encoder and the transducer In this study on the retina of a mouse model of RP the transducer is the layer of remaining retinal ganglion cells in a degenerated retina that are still capable of sending action potentials to the brain To couple the encoder to the transducer the retinal ganglion cells were made to respond to artificial stimulation by the addition of exogenous light sensitive ionic channels through optogenetic gene therapy The encoder calculates the appropriate direct stimulation of each retinal ganglion cell to produce an output that resembles the anticipated firing pattern of action potentials Visual information of natural scenes captured and processed by the retina is thus coded in the collective firing patterns by thousands of individual retinal ganglion cells In this study the firing patterns of
