  • Get Into Parks! | Iowa Wild Kids
    our county parks and take advantage of the organized programs the County Conservation Boards in our area Recently we attended a family archery shoot and a learn to fish program Both were a hit for our kids cousins and friends The archery shoot was sponsored by our County Conservation Board and led by Emily Klein She instructed the kids on safety and proper form before letting each have a turn She had various sized bows for left and right hands and we were surprised to learn that Lady Bug is a left handed shooter Her tiny arms needed my help steading the bow Wiggle Worm our resident expert on everything didn t need any help at all She was quite proud when she hit the target twice in a row I was pretty proud too Our County Conservation Board and local park rangers are also hosting park programs in the city parks every Tuesday evening This week s program was on fishing and was taught by Ameircorp volunteer Anna Just Lady Bug Dragonfly and I attended and learned how to tie a fisherman s knot practiced our casting and learned about important fishing tools to have in our tackle box Each of the kids in attendance got to take home a fishing kit with a ruler bobbers and Fish Iowa stickers ruler and brochure Find your County Conservation Board s website and see what programs are available in your area Here are a few of our favorites Polk County Conservation Princess in the Park Nature Playdate Creek Stop Nature Story Hour https www polkcountyiowa gov conservation calendar Clayton County Conservation Junior Naturalist Program http www claytoncountyconservation org events htm Scott County Conservation Pioneer Life Pop Bottle Rockets Junior Naturalist Camp http www scottcountyiowa com conservation calendar php Leave a Reply

  • Out on the High Trestle Trail | Iowa Wild Kids
    me a little free time on a Saturday morning and this is where you ll find me too The completion of the trail brought back the bridge connecting the towns of Madrid and Woodward both located approximately 30 minutes northwest of the Des Moines metro area What a sight The view as one bikes through the trail extended half a mile above the Des Moines River is designed to simulate descending into a mine shaft to honor the mining history of the region Though it lights up a little past bedtime the trail is still a hit for everyone in our family The cross country team we still coach runs weekly through the summer and more often during the school year on the trail Bikers training for RAGBRAI curious visitors and the locals all find what they need on the trail be it an educational kiosk of sorts for a break half way across the bridge to the inspirational sayings posted every so often to the friendly smile of Toad and the other Trail Ambassadors who keep the trail clean and safe Mostly the patrons are patient with those of us who go more slowly who take up the whole width of the trail with their jogging stroller and almost independent roller blader and whose children stop sporadically to investigate a snail trail or move a turtle to the safety of the tall grass Even skeptics would agree the trail and bridge has done a lot to revitalize a small central Iowa town Two Bears Lodge Bed Breakfast houses overnight guests and establishments like Saddles BBQ Bistro and the Art House on State pay homage to the trail and its charm Flat Tire Lounge even serves breakfast through the summer An evening or two out on the trail bikes and
