  • Gifts We Didn’t Know We Needed – ICOMB
gift is inferior we think we have no place in the body nothing to contribute and withdraw Verse 14 the foot can t say Because I m not the hand I have no use The second is being proud and independent Verse 21 the eye can t say to the hand I don t need you Very gifted people may be tempted to try to do it all themselves Our calling is to discern and identify our gifts and accept who we are These gifts are given for us to use together and really for God to use according to his will In our global community some groups seem to be super resourced and struggle to know what they might need from others Other groups seem to be under resourced and feel they don t have much to offer Part of my role as Director of ICOMB is to bridge that gap I believe In the Congo which has a large MB conference over 100 000 members and a vibrant mission people have felt they don t have much to offer largely because the economy of DRC is very poor But a unique gift has emerged from their disadvantage Women have become entrepreneurs to generate family income Through the years they have gathered to make and sell all kinds of products When they gather they study the Bible Over time leaders with teaching and communication gifts have emerged These women are part of a group known as African Women Theologians And they have taken up pastoral roles in the church In Kinshasa for example of the 60 MB churches about 20 are led by women I admitted to the students that this is controversial In other parts of our MB world people are shaking their heads and saying Impossible But it has happened 3 Protect your vision of God s goal for you Christ gives gifts for a reason that we build up unity 12 25 love 12 25 and chapter 13 and maturity Eph 4 13 16 All this is to build up the Church and the Church is God s witness to the powers Eph 3 10 and the world Matthew 16 18 28 18 20 I challenged the students to use their time to discern God s calling and goal for them Whether they go into church ministry or otherwise they have a calling in Christ and their gifts enable them to build up the church and its witness And what do we do with gifts we don t think we need or think are impossible If they came from Christ who are we to say I have no need of them Instead we need to seek God earnestly for his intentions and purposes and follow through Beloved Reader both these gift stories are controversial for some Mennonite Brethren but not for others God will guide our global community ICOMB to the goals he has in mind for us But we must keep our eyes on Christ

  • The Immutable Law of Love – ICOMB
in 6 2 Carry each other s burdens and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ The Law of Love is like the law of gravity It s immutable To challenge or disobey it always has consequences Those consequences vary depending on the way we test it A key factor is time with gravity the effect is immediately observed with love it is not so immediate Thus we are fooled into thinking that the Law of Love isn t very powerful to our great detriment In families when love is not given appropriately marriages fall apart children suffer and psychological pain ensues In the church when love is not expressed appropriately friction and rifts develop conflict occurs factions and splits result and the witness of the church to the Love of Christ is damaged It s amazing that we don t think of this when the disagreements begin when shots are taken at someone when we exercise power inappropriately I wish we would really believe in the Law of Love like we believe the law of gravity We would be much more careful in our relationships We would nurture them more diligently sacrifice personal gain or even the advantage of being right so that love would be preserved We would discipline and shape one another s lives more carefully and gently We would lead in the church and in the home differently God himself put the Law of Love into place just like he put the law of gravity into place at creation We ll all do well to take care to observe both Bible Study Devotional Similar Posts Peace Lessons from the Global MB Family 7 Jun 2013 President of Columbia Bible College Bryan Born called me for some peace lessons stories coming Harvest Liminal Fecundity

  • A Moral Case for the Resurrection – ICOMB
meeting broke up as people openly mocked him Acts 17 32 Resurrection was a cultural religious challenge The churches of Corinth and Thessalonica were susceptible to the doubts raised by their cultural leaders Thus we have concentrated teaching in the books sent to these 2 churches and interestingly nowhere else in Paul There are a couple of lessons here One Remember that scripture comes to us from actual human contexts with specific issues For example I can t read 1 Thessalonians 4 13 18 without thinking it s about the rapture because of the superhuman effort we ve made to determine precisely when Jesus Second Coming will occur Rapture before during or after the Tribulation or the Millennium or maybe the Millennium is already in place so what does that do to the Second Coming etc etc But it s not about The Coming of the Lord the section title in my Bible nearly so much as it is about Courage About the Dead Paul reminds the Thessalonians that he taught all of this earlier 1 Thess 5 1 2 2 Thess 2 5 He had needed to invest this effort in that cultural context of powerful philosophical doubt of the resurrection of anybody Two The resurrection and end times have a moral implication Any mental games we play to discern when and how are disastrous distractions from the primary purpose of this doctrine Paul s sermon connected repentance with the coming of the Lord The philosophers of Athens and Corinth and elsewhere ducked the implications by mocking the idea of the resurrection Today we duck the moral imperative of the end times by conjecturing when and how that might occur By we I mean the church Which dulls our witness to the world From these lessons I suggest Let s not divide over when Jesus is expected to return An a millennialist is only a split hair s breadth away from a pre trib rapturist not a heretic Extrapolating from this let s remember that our doctrines originally came out of specific cultural contexts in which God s people needed challenging and training Truth was revealed in context originally it must be learned and applied in context still And then let s engage the cultural challenge implied with the resurrection moral lives sacrifice For example the church of the North practically doubts or doesn t care about the resurrection because life is comfortable But if the resurrection and Lord s Coming implies an occasion when our ethics and practices will be judged let s not duck the issue by discussing the details of when or how Jesus returns Let s figure out the moral imperatives and face them head on Bible Study Devotional Similar Posts The Immutable Law of Love 27 Jul 2013 To be immutable is to be unchangeable Gravity is immutable It works every time Thus US MB Study Conference Day 2 25 Jan 2013 Friday January 25 A Long Day with a Lot of Input Roger
