    of Diabetic Retinopathy with the aim of testing a new eye drop treatment that could prevent the development of diabetic retinopathy Diabetic retinopathy DR the general term for all eye complications caused by diabetes is the leading cause of blindness among working age individuals in developed countries Current treatments of DR are only indicated in advanced stages of the disease and are intrusive costly and associated with significant side effects For this reason new non intrusive pharmacological treatments for the early stages of the disease are needed Such new 4 treatment could open a new field of research reduce the socio economic burden of treating DR and ultimately improve the lives of people living with diabetes For more information visit www eurocondor eu 4 ePredice Early prevention ePredice the Consortium for the Early Prevention of Diabetes Complications in Europe unites 32 European academics public healthcare professionals and SMEs with the aim to assess the effects of various medical treatments and lifestyle interventions on different microvascular complications affecting people with intermediate hyperglycaemia and screen detected Type 2 diabetes This research project comes at a time where new treatments for the early prevention of diabetes complications are increasingly needed Type 2 diabetes and Impaired Glucose Tolerance IGT are the major cause for morbidity and mortality due to associated complications in Europe The economic burden is steadily rising and with poor quality of life for people with diabetes due to chronic treatment and multiple complications early prevention could substantially reduce the socio economic burden of diabetes in Europe For more informationm visit www epredice eu 5 Involvement in other EU funded projects IDF Europe has extensive experience in EU funded projects Here are some links to previous EU funded projects where IDF Europe has been involved in Reniewing Health European project aiming at

    the unanimous adoption of the Political Declaration 2 on NCD Prevention and Control a document that position diabetes and NCDs at the top of the global health and development agenda In the run up to the Summit the International Diabetes Federation launched a powerful campaign together with the Non Communicable Disease Alliance 3 or NCD Alliance Uniting a network of of over 2 000 civil society organizations in more than 170 countries the NCD Alliance worked closely with NGOs and civil society to advocate for the issues related to the UN Summit on Non Communicable Diseases held in September 2011 in New York As part of this work IDF played a critical role in developing the NCD Alliance UN Outcomes Statement 4 The Statement served as a reference document for the United Nations the draft the official UN Outcome Statement that was unanimously adopted at the UN Summit by 193 Member States Key milestones in the run up to the UN Summit on Non Communicable Diseases included In April 2011 the WHO and the Russian Government organized the WHO Global Forum 5 and the Russian Ministerial meeting 6 resulting in the Moscow Declaration 7 In May 2011 the World Health Assembly issued a declaration 8 noting that NCDs pose one of the greatest challenges to health and development contributing to more than 60 of deaths worldwide For more information on IDF campaign for the UN Summit on NCDs click here 9 For more information about the impact of the Summit and follow up advocacy work click here 10 Other IDF campaigns At international level IDF is carrying out various campaigns to promote diabetes care prevention and a cure worldwide More information on these campaigns can be found here 11 Source URL http www idf org regions EUR idf global campaigns
