    type 2 diabetes Co hosted by Therese Comodini Cachia MEP and Nicola Caputo MEP the event began with a presentation by Jack Delicata a 17 year old from Malta who has been living with type 1 diabetes since the age of one He shared with the audience his passion for sports his experience with diabetes and called on politicians to take note and pursue active policies on diabetes Kyle Jacques Rose a former professional cyclist provided a perspective of the societal challenge in changing behaviour the role of new technologies in helping manage diabetes better during physical activity and his own experience as a former sportsman The final speaker Melanie Stephenson a current professional athlete and youth advocate spoke about her experience of being a young person with diabetes and the importance of good nutrition in connection to high level physical activity A full house the audience included no less than 14 MEPs including those from the EU Diabetes Working Group and those with a particular interest in diabetes Impromptu speakers included MEPs David Borelli and Christel Schaldemose IDF EUROPE PRIZES IN DIABETES Following the lunch debate the IDF Europe Prizes in Diabetes were presented This year s prize for

    europe org 2 Placemats Steps to Healthy Living EN 3 Placemats Steps to Healthy Living FR 4 Web banner Steps to Healthy Living EN 5 Leaflet Take the Plunge Drink Water EN FR 6 Leaflet Easy Steps to Healthy Eating 7 Leaflet Easy Steps to Healthy Living 8 Calling for better implementation of diabetes policies in Europe On 5 November IDF Europe held a breakfast debate to present the findings of the 4 th edition of Diabetes in Europe Policy Puzzle 9 a pan European audit which documents the evolution of diabetes policies in Europe and calls for improved implementation and evaluation of policies for diabetes care and prevention More than 50 participants including policy makers representatives from the European Commission public health and industry organisations involved in diabetes care attended the breakfast which was also supported by a group of 10 MEPs from different political groups Discussions focused on the findings of the 4th edition of the Policy Puzzle as well as case studies from Cyprus and Finland followed up by a Q A session In the afternoon Marisa Matias MEP also hosted the awarding ceremony of the 2014 IDF Europe Prizes in Diabetes This year the prize for Young Researcher was awarded to Dr Joana Gaspar category Young Researcher in recognition of her outstanding scientific work in the field of cellular and molecular biology The Polish Diabetes Association was awarded the prize for Long Standing Achievement for more than three decades of relentless work to improve diabetes care and prevention in Poland IDF Europe also had the honour to welcome Ms Isabel de La Mata Principal Advisor for DG Sanco to award the prize to the Polish Diabetes Association Last but not least around 200 people had their blood glucose tested at the exhibition area during the day
