  • Diabetes Africa Foot Initiative (DAFI)
    diagnosis the severe complications due to diabetes the high mortality rate and the poor quality of life of people with diabetes The diabetic foot is a complication of diabetes that carries a high morbidity and mortality rate in Africa and is increasing as the burden of diabetes continues to rise Amputations remain high despite intensive training of health workers in traditional preventive methods DAFI aims to address the lack of a common regionally accepted sustainable and comprehensive approach for diabetic foot care in the region Diabetes care in Africa assumed a quality priority only recently This important change of focus in diabetes care in Sub Saharan Africa followed the African Declaration in 2006 in Cape Town and later the UN Resolution 61 225 in December of the same year The African Diabetes Declaration calls on governments of African countries and all partners and stakeholders in diabetes to prevent diabetes and related chronic diseases and to improve quality of life and reduce morbidity and premature mortality from diabetes The UN Summit on non communicable diseases in September 2011 marked a new era of political commitment in confronting the global diabetes epidemic and offered a new window of opportunity to develop sustainable

  • DAFI - Objectives
    intervention curriculum in the African region that respects local needs and the working environment Developing a risk stratification and intervention tool to prevent complications of the foot Training 3 health workers from 10 selected centres to use the risk stratification and intervention tool in their clinical practice Establishing and strengthening the capacity of 10 selected centres in 10 African countries to implement the programme and to deliver diabetes foot care e g health workers trained basic foot care supplies and equipment provided clinical environment prepared Starting information gathering activities with associated patient associations Establishing a foundation for community national engagement through collaboration with health authorities DAFI is a two phase programme phase I from 2012 to 2014 and phase II from 2015 to 2017 DAFI Phase I resulted in a 20 month initiative involving health authorities IDF Member Associations and local communities from the ten participating countries Initially planned for one year it was decided to extend Phase I to consolidate the programme evaluate progress and build capacity for excellence The main objectives of Phase I were to Support health care workers in implementing and put into practice what they have learnt during the training and start to use the

    education and increasing access to tools to implement DSME in various settings such as local clinics hospitals and national member associations Diabetes Conversations is a global programme created by Healthy Interactions in collaboration with the International Diabetes Federation and sponsored by Lilly Diabetes It does not include the United States of America and Puerto Rico The training for health care professionals is provided through a train the trainer approach Expert Trainers are trained by the Global team They return to their country and train health care professionals to use the Conversation Map Education tools Conversation Map Education tools are an innovative education method that use interactive group participation to empower people with diabetes to become actively involved in managing the disease As of March 2013 Conversation Map Education tools have been developed for use in 121 countries are available in 38 languages and approximately 200 expert trainers are engaged to train and support facilitators around the globe The Conversation Starter Education tools are designed to provide valuable one on one engagement The tools are designed to combine powerful visual learning techniques with active dialogue between a person with diabetes and his her educator To meet the Diabetes Conversation Map expert
