    would be the defining characteristics of the 10th Annual IGFA World Record Achievement Awards presented by Hugh s Culinary With top achievers in 20 categories spanning across anglers captains and manufacturers in attendance for the festivities on April 20 2013 it s easy to understand the spirit of the happy and humble celebration It s just amazing to be here among all the anglers you see in the magazines enthused Sue Tindale who traveled from New Zealand to IGFA Headquarters in Dania Beach Florida USA to receive her World Record honors With 73 total records last year Tindale was the Top Female Saltwater Angler Top Female Fly Rod Angler and the Female Angler of the Year Meanwhile her husband Scott Tindale joked that there would not be enough room at their table for all the awards he walked away with plaques for earning the Top Male Fly Rod Angler and Top Captain Guide titles The category winners continued to share the spotlight with those who have helped and come before them as the evening progressed Steve Wozniak who was recognized as the Top Male Saltwater Angler and Top Male Angler of the Year with 21 total records extended his gratitude to the manufacturers who make his favorite equipment and to IGFA Trustee Martin Arostegui and the Arostegui family for their fishing friendship and hospitality Junior angler Brielle Bennett third place Female All Tackle Length winner her younger sister Samantha tied with three other women for fourth place in the same category graciously offered her congratulations to the evening s other stars And Raz Reid representing Sage s victory in the top Fly Rod manufacturer category thanked the anglers who made their win possible And among the catches that contributed to a great year of fishing were those made by Stacey Parkerson and Enrico Capozzi who collected their respective third and second place awards in the Fly Rod Angling division Parkerson s tremendous 18 4 kg 40 lb 9 oz Atlantic sailfish Istiophorus platypterus caught on 2 kg 4 lb tippet in Cancun Mexico on April 10 2012 contributed to her category finish as did Capozzi s 20 75 kg 45 lb 12 oz Atlantic sailfish caught on 1 kg 2 lb tippet also in Cancun on March 2 2012 But the most anticipated speeches of the evening came from the two Lifetime Achievement Award winners Dotty Ballantyne and Heather Harkavy Harkavy s touching tribute to her father recounting her early record hunting memories and the skills and sportsmanship she s learned on her 100 record journey had many in the audience in tears Ballantyne shared her fond memories and well won lessons from 10 years of fishing with her husband Fitz Coker and both ladies profusely thanked the captains that helped them with so many of their record accomplishments But Ballantyne closed with a toast that rang true for everyone in the room Thank you most of all to the fish those we caught those we ate and those that

    School of Sportfishing Observer Training IGFA Junior Anglers Fishing Summer Camp Education and Outreach Programs Release Recommendations Education Staff Volunteer Opportunities Resources Videos PHOTO GALLERY IGFA Publications E Newsletters Species Database Captains and Guides IGFA Mobile Weigh Stations Support Join or Renew Make a Gift Shop Upcoming Events Advertising Opportunities Contact Donor Opportunities Donor Societies Member Discounts Membership Benefits IGMR at Cabo Hatteras Billfish Shootout Australia s third IGFA Great Marlin Race IGMR event is just days away The Gold Coast Game Fish Club in Queensland will host the IGMR during its annual Cabo Hatteras Billfish Shootout April 12 14 2013 The Gold Coast IGMR event follows the 26 th Annual Lizard Island Black Marlin Classic held in October of 2012 and the GAMEX Australian International Billfish Tournament held in March of the same year in bringing the IGFA s ambitious billfish research project Down Under We and our partners at Stanford University are excited to return to Australia IGFA Conservation Director and IGMR co director Jason Schratwieser said The results from the two previous IGMR events on the continent have given us incredible results It will be interesting to see what the Cabo Hatteras Billfish Shootout brings us Australia is indeed home to some of the IGMR s farthest travelling marlin that have carried satellite tags The GAMEX AIBT Tournament deployed the second place tag for the 2011 2012 IGMR race year Bjorn Farley s 100 kg 220 lb blue marlin traveled 1 035 nautical miles after being at sea 120 days The Lizard Island event deployed two tags that traveled even more impressive distances in a mere 54 days the 400 kg 882 lb black marlin caught by Luke Cefai and sponsored by Peter Teakle swam 1 360 nm and the satellite tag placed in a 360 kg

    IGFA School of Sportfishing Observer Training IGFA Junior Anglers Fishing Summer Camp Education and Outreach Programs Release Recommendations Education Staff Volunteer Opportunities Resources Videos PHOTO GALLERY IGFA Publications E Newsletters Species Database Captains and Guides IGFA Mobile Weigh Stations Support Join or Renew Make a Gift Shop Upcoming Events Advertising Opportunities Contact Donor Opportunities Donor Societies Member Discounts Membership Benefits RBFF Grant Educational Impact The Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation RBFF Grant has been instrumental in enabling the IGFA to reach more than 45 000 children each year This grant which is part of the RBFF s National Youth Boating and Fishing Initiative has helped expand the IGFA Outreach Program across the United States and actively involve more children in fishing and boating Additionally the grant funds educational labs and fishing clinics to reach underserved schools and economically challenged youth in the South Florida community By introducing tens of thousands of children to our sport the IGFA hopes to not only create lifelong anglers but stewards of our natural environment as well The interactive hands on programs provide these students especially those from low socio economic backgrounds with impacting experiences that can very well lead them down career paths in natural history marine and environmental biology as well as conservation and earth studies While recreational fishing and marine conservation are integral parts of life in South Florida and vital to our region the majority of children rarely learn about their importance Further the health of our oceans directly relates to the health of humankind We believe that seeing firsthand how this affects us all can inspire our students to build deeper awareness and activism Boulevard Heights Elementary School We chose IGFA s educational programs due to the fact that IGFA brings to life what students read on the pages in

    Education and Outreach Programs Release Recommendations Education Staff Volunteer Opportunities Resources Videos PHOTO GALLERY IGFA Publications E Newsletters Species Database Captains and Guides IGFA Mobile Weigh Stations Support Join or Renew Make a Gift Shop Upcoming Events Advertising Opportunities Contact Donor Opportunities Donor Societies Member Discounts Membership Benefits Capt Brad Philipps releases 25 000th billfish Right to left Javier Saca Capt Brad Philipps and IGFA Representative Paco Saca celebrate Philipps 25 000th billfish release This just in from IGFA Representative Francisco Paco Saca Capt Brad Philipps reached a milestone by releasing his 25 000th billfish on February 2 2013 aboard his 40 ft Gamefishermen Decisive off the Pacific Coast of Guatemala Central America Philipps has won The Billfish Foundation s Release Captain of the Year Award for the past 11 consecutive years and is widely recognized as one of the most prolific billfishing captains of all time What makes it an even more special accomplishment is that more than 23 000 of these fish have been released together with his longtime first mate Kennedy Hernandez in the cockpit fishing in Guatemala They first fished together on the Pelagian and for the past eight seasons they have been on the Decisive out of his own operation Guatemalan Billfishing Adventures As an ambassador for billfish conservation and the promotion of release ethics Philipps has used only Eagle Claw Circle Hooks in his baits for the past 13 years ensuring the healthy release of all fish He has amassed some impressive numbers over the years in getting to this total with as many as 2 759 releases in a calendar year 97 blue marlin released in a single year 51 sailfish in a single day on the fly rod for a single angler and as many as 91 sailfish in a single day

  • IGFA | New Clubs and All-Tackle Length Species
    Record Game Fishes book as of March 1 2013 The IGFA sport fishing s world record keeper has added nine species to its All Tackle Length record program and made a few new additions to the Slam and Trophy Clubs as well This means a great shot at a record for enterprising anglers and more opportunities for Slam and Trophy fish seekers worldwide New All Tackle Length Species and Minimum Lengths Now two years old the IGFA s All Tackle Length record program recognizes great catches based on length rather than weight and requires that fish be released alive and in good health Conservation minded anglers have embraced the record category submitting more than 441 applications since its inception Originally there were 67 eligible saltwater species and 62 eligible saltwater species with these eight additions those numbers change to 72 and 66 respectively Black grouper Mycteroperca bonaci 77 cm Broomtail grouper Mycteroperca xenarcha 75 cm Cero mackerel Scomberomorus regalis 47 cm Dentex Dentex dentex 49 cm Grey snapper Lutjanus griseus 37 cm Madai Pagrus major 40 cm Nile perch Lates niloticus 100 cm Orinoco peacock Cichla orinocensis 32 cm Papuan black snapper Lutjanus goldiei 50 cm The IGFA will begin accepting record applications for these newly eligible species on March 1 2013 Details on the All Tackle Length record program can be found in IGFA s International Angling rules online New IGFA Slam and Trophy Clubs Ambitious anglers who are not necessarily after a world record catch also have some new challenges to enjoy from the IGFA Effective March 1 2013 applications will be accepted for the following new Slam and Trophy Clubs 30 lb Muskellunge Club 50 lb Dolphinfish Club and a new Offshore Grand Slam Club The existing Offshore Slam Club catching three or four different billfish species in a day will be renamed as the Billfish Grand Slam Club As is required for all IGFA Slam and Trophy Clubs catches must be made in accordance with IGFA rules with the only exception being that the fish for a Trophy Club can be weighed on the boat to allow for a safe release Billfish and other species for a Slam Club should not be weighed or unnecessarily handled as to increase the probability of a healthy release Qualifications 30 lb Muskellunge Club An angler must catch a muskie that weighs 30 lb or more on a certified scale The fish can be weighed from the boat A photo of the angler and the fish is required Once properly documented anglers are encouraged to release the fish 50 lb Dolphinfish Club An angler must catch a dolphinfish also called mahi mahi dolphin or dorado that weighs 50 lb or more on a certified scale The fish can be weighed from the boat A photo of the angler and the fish is required Once properly documented anglers are encouraged to release the fish Offshore Grand and Super Grand Slam Club An angler must capture three or four of the following
