  • IGFA | Peter Teakle Wins 2012-2013 IGMR
    by Peter Teakle during the 26th Annual Lizard Island Black Marlin Classic in Australia which travelled 2 577 nm 15 of the total distance recorded in the entire year before the tag popped up after 69 days The winning black marlin being brought alongside Kekoa to be tagged during the IGFA Great Marlin Race off of Lizard Island Australia Photo courtesy of Kelly Dalling Fallon of www blackmarlinfishingblog com That we ve now seen the second longest distance of the IGMR project is amazing said IGMR co chair and Stanford University marine biologist Dr Randy Kochevar But the real win here is that in the past two years we have recorded a total of 31 000 nautical miles worth of data on open ocean habitat usage available for scientists anywhere Having access to this kind of data is what researchers need in order to better understand how these incredible animals are using the open ocean Tracks for every satellite tag deployed during the IGFA Great Marlin Race are available on the IGMR Tracks page Above are the tracks of marlin tagged during the 26th Annual Lizard Island Black Marlin Classic where Peter Teakle s 2 577 nm winning tag was deployed To see the tracks on this map locate the slider on the top left hand of the screen Drag both slider buttons all the way to the right and then drag the left slider all the way back to the left which should display all of the tag tracks You can also animate these tracks by then dragging the right slider all the way back to the left and then clicking on the small stopwatch icon at the top of the slider The longest track in IGMR history belonged to last year s winner a tag that travelled a whopping 4 776 nm and was sponsored by Trevor Somny Bruce McKee and Bill Crawford during the Club Nautico de San Juan 58th Annual Billfish Tournament held in Puerto Rico September 5 11 2011 This year s winning tag was deployed on November 11 2012 by Chase Hooper aboard Kekoa at Spur Reef The angler Scotty Taylor described the fish as being in excellent condition The second place tag of this race year belongs to an 82 kg 180 lb blue marlin that swam 1 743 nm in only 87 days Co sponsors Ralph Czabayski and Rolf Czabayski who also caught the fish and deployed the tag during the 53rd Annual Hawaii International Billfish Tournament in Kona Hawaii on August 13 2012 stated that they are proud to be involved in the satellite tagging program To date this distance is the third longest track recorded in the IGMR We have already been able to implement this data to better protect billfish populations observed IGMR co chair and IGFA Conservation Director Jason Schratwieser Being able to demonstrate the incredible distances these fish travel helped us lobby for the passage of the Billfish Conservation Act in the United States late last year

    total of 47 MK 10 Pop up Archival Transmitting PAT tags have been deployed on marlin in Africa Australia Ecuador Portugal Puerto Rico Spain and Hawaii Although the MK 10 satellite tags can offer a deployment period of over a year the IGMR was using 120 day deployments that were increased to 180 days at the 2012 Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament Wildlife Computers released a second satellite tag to track the large scale movements and behavior of fish Their Mini Pop up Archival Transmitting PAT tags are smaller versions of the MK 10 tags They are 60 millimeters smaller 22 grams lighter and have deployment periods of up to one year Since the miniPATs are smaller and may incur less drag the IGMR is eager to incorporate some into the race in order to compare their reliability with the larger tags IGFA Chairman Packy Offield has generously agreed to sponsor 30 miniPATs which he plans to deploy on marlin from his boat Kelsey Lee during an extended fishing expedition to French Polynesia Although these tags will not be eligible to win the annual IGFA Great Marlin Race we are incredibly excited to increase the geographic range of the IGMR to

    880 lb black marlin that was released in perfect condition The fish was caught by Tim Ballantine and tagged by Jack Graham aboard Afishionado The remaining four tags were reissued to other boats in The Cairns Professional Game Fish Association also fishing off of Lizard Island the following week On November 2 2012 Roger Kuhnel on Moana III tagged a 544 kg 1200 lb black marlin The angler Douglas Perry described his fish as huge strong and healthy Three days later on November 5 2012 S Sruat aboard Iceman tagged a 400 kg 880 lb black marlin caught by Luke Cefai Two days after that on November 7 2012 the fourth tag was deployed by Ross Finlays on on a 200 kg 440 lb black marlin caught by 16 year old Harry Davies aboard Top Shot The black was his very first marlin The final tag was deployed on November 11 2012 by Chase Hopper from Kekoa on a 360 kg 794 lb black at Spur Reef The angler Scotty Taylor described his fish as being in excellent condition We are pleased to announce that all of the tags in this race were reported On December 7 2012 Tag 4 surfaced 91 nm from where it was deployed On December 15 2012 Tag 2 reported just six nm from the starting point On December 29 2012 Tag 3 reported 1 360 nm away from where it was deployed The next tag to surface was Tag 5 on January 19 2013 an astonishing 2 577 nm away from where it was deployed The last tag to surface was Tag 1 on January 25 2013 with a distance 356 nm Congratulations to Team Kekoa Team Kekoa s marlin has officially been declared the winner of the 2012 Lizard Island Great Marlin Race

  • IGFA | San Juan Puerto Rico 2012
    IBT tournament began September 23 2012 in San Juan Puerto Rico Four tags were generously sponsored by Federico Stubbe Pepe Anton Sjon and Jamey Harless Agie Vicente and Gustavo Hermida The first satellite tag was deployed during the second day of the tournament September 24 2012 on a 79 kg 175 lb blue marlin After a 13 minute fight the fish was caught by Salvador Egea and tagged by Federico Stubbe aboard Prisa On the morning of the fourth day of the tournament September 26th Carlos Garcia B hooked up with a 91 kg 200 lb blue marlin aboard Amirita and the blue was tagged by IGFA Conservation Director Jason Schratwieser On September 30th in the afternoon of the final day of the tournament Sam Friederichs placed the third satellite tag on a 136 kg 300 lb blue marlin aboard M M Hook Up The angler Ernesto Oliva described the marlin as having good color and being lit up the entire time Just two hours later Gustavo Hermida caught a 59 kg 130 lb blue and the marlin was tagged aboard Fish Hunter We are pleased to announce that three of the four tags in this race have reported and the track data has been released by our partners at Stanford University On November 20 2012 the tag deployed by team M M Hook Up reported 397 nautical miles nm after just 51 days at large On January 1 2013 team Amirita s tag surfaced 1 162 nm from where it was deployed after only 97 days at large The last tag to surface was from team Fish Hunter with a distance of 496 nm after reaching the full 180 day deployment period Congratulations to Team Amirita Team Amirita s marlin has officially been declared the winner of the 2012

    53rd Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament HIBT IGFA Great Marlin Race IGMR in Kailua Kona It didn t take long for the fishing to get hot at this year s HIBT The HIBT is the first race location for the IGMR s second year and day one of the tournament saw three fish tagged The first fish tagged was a 136 kg 300 lb blue marlin caught by Stephanie Chen aboard the Golden Aussie piloted by Capt Dave McComas First Mate Ari Levine placed the tag sponsored by West Marine s Bluewater Futures Marine Conservation Grant Capt Chuck Wigzell s Hooked Up followed suit when Townsville Game Fishing Club s tag was placed on Greg Gilbert s 79 kg 175 lb blue marlin by First Mate Rick Reger The third tag was deployed on an 82 kg 180 lb blue marlin after it was caught aboard Capt David Unger s Nasty Habits by angler Rolf Czabayski The tag was put on the fish by Czabayski s son Ralph who also sponsored the tag Day two of the HIBT IGMR was also a productive fishing day as three more tags were deployed on fish Capt Guy Terwilliger led High Flier and the South African Protea Team to the first tag of the day Their tag was deployed on a 91 kg 200 lb blue caught by Wian Terblanche and tagged by Dave Martin Angler Masaharu Matsushita followed suit by tagging another blue marlin of the same size from the vessel Lightspeed manned by Capt Rob Ellyn This tag number five in the HIBT IGMR was sponsored by the Kona Game Fishing Club of Taiyo Japan Tag six sponsored by Ralph Bodine of Ultimate Sportfishing was placed on a 68 kg 150 lb blue marlin from aboard Capt Mark Schubert s Miss Mojo
