  • IGFA | Historic Profile: A Time When “Over” and “Under” Reels Competed for Prominence Around the World
Fortuna 9 ½ under reel and the J A Coxe 12 0 over reel Hardy 7 and 7 Nottingham style wood saltwater under reels By IGFA Historian Mike Farrior Did you know there was a time in the early history of big game fishing when proponents of over and under reels competed for prominence around the world Following the founding of the Tuna Club of Santa Catalina Island in 1898 the enlarged over style reels used to capture the first tuna marlin and broadbill swordfish dominated the tackle market It was the subsequent discovery of larger game fish in foreign seas and introduction of tackle successfully used outside the sphere of American influence that challenged that The British Empire helped reveal the potential for big game angling around the world With a pioneering spirit their anglers modified the existing fly reel idea into much larger and stronger models able to battle the larger quarry found at sea In 1915 Major Campbell caught New Zealand s first marlin with a reel attached beneath the rod made for him by the Hardy Brothers of England after losing one to tackle failure the prior year Similar catches by Mr Andreas and other South Seas pioneers in India and Australia brought proof they could catch any size fish with this method In 1926 Zane Grey visited New Zealand and a debate ensued he caught New Zealand s first broadbill swordfish and his companion Laurie Mitchell caught the new world record black marlin weighing 976 lb His favorite reel at the time was a J A Coxe reel mounted above the rod in the American fashion Grey publicly condemned the New Zealander s use of under style reels in the Auckland Herald creating an unwanted controversy Several experts such as White Wickham and George Garey
