    one day at Club Nautico de San Juan s 58th Annual International Billfish Tournament IBT due to Tropical Storm Maria the 185 anglers from 12 countries fishing aboard 51 boats released 84 blue marlin 15 more blue marlin releases than last year s tournament in a full four days of fishing The turn out of anglers boats and fish was incredible this year says Frankie Mirandés chairman of the 58th IBT Mayte won the Top Boat trophy with six blue marlin releases We released two blue marlin the first day one the second and three today says Puerto Rico s Jose Cestero owner and one of four anglers aboard the 60 foot Hatteras The last 15 minutes of the tournament were tough Then as soon as we knew we won we started jumping up and down and turned up the music Peje and Sea Born finished second and third respectively each with five blue marlin releases Peje having reached their five first The Top Angler trophy went to Juan B Soto Balbas who released four blue marlin I m very happy I ve fished this tournament for 20 years and never won says Puerto Rico s Balbas who fished on the 52 foot Hatteras Bimba Luck knowing how to fight a marlin to have patience and not lose your cool is the secret to my success Puerto Rico s Hector Rodriguez Blazquez finished as the second best angler while Scotland s Trevor Somny ended third Both men released three blue marlin with Blazquez releasing his first Somny also won Best International Angler We will be back next year says Somny who fished with his future son in law Malcolm MacDonald Australian anglers Eric Visser and Tim Gillingham each released two blue marlin and finished second and third respectively in the international angler standings Puerto Rico s Stephanie Lebron angling aboard the 54 foot Bertram Tati Way earned Best Female with the release of one blue marlin I caught it in the morning of the first day of the tournament says Lebron an experienced angler who won the top lady prize in the Cangrejos Yacht Club Billfish Tournament in 2009 and Scrub Island Tournament in the British Virgin Islands in 2010 I only fish these three tournaments but I fish often throughout the year I really enjoy it The IBT is a well orchestrated fishing competition that boasts nightly parties a spectacular boat parade special Ladies Program a Shoot Out start past the famous El Morro Castle honorary jet fly over welcoming the fleet back to shore and a tournament finale Gala Awards Banquet New this year the IBT served at the launch tournament for the International Game Fishing Association IGFA year long Great Marlin Race Angling teams sponsored 10 pop up archival satellite tags valued at 4000 each and placed these in released Atlantic blue marlin during the tournament The tags are designed to pop off the marlin four months after being placed float to the surface and provide researchers

    May 2 2012 a seventh tag was placed on another 100 kg 220 lb black marlin caught by Lizette Walker on Proxima On May 5 2012 the eighth and final tag was placed on Bob the Marlin a 95 kg 209 lb black caught by Jan Hofman fishing from Ocean Commotion The winner of this race was Team Big W Team Big W s fish ventured south and west rounding Cape Agulhas and passing from the Indian Ocean into the Atlantic Ocean basin with its tag reporting a total of 1 018 nm Tags Reporting from Madagascar Can t Break Lead JULY 2012 A blue marlin caught by Malcolm Buchanon and tagged by sponsor Ryan Williamson reported off Madagascar 636 nm from where it was tagged However it seems Team Big W s blue marlin still remains in the lead Team Big W s fish traveled an astonishing 1 018 nm rounding the Cape of Good Hope and traveling into the Atlantic in only 36 days However there are still three tags at large on black marlin tagged out of Richard s Bay These tags are expected to report no later than mid to late August How far will these fish travel how deep will they dive and where will they end up Since none of the black marlin tagged in the South Africa IGMR have reported yet it s still anyone s guess which species will swim farthest blue or black In the Exmouth Australia IGMR the current fish in the lead is a blue marlin that traveled a distance of 1 035 nm from the waters west of Western Australia north all the way to Java Indonesia South African Deep Sea Angling Association Classic IGMR Race Begins FEBRUARY 2012 February 22nd was the first fishing day of the Fourth Columbia Billfish Classic hosted by the South African Deep Sea Angling Association SADSAA The tournament saw 70 boats which hailed out of Richard s Bay Zululand in South Africa to catch and release billfish This tournament s participation in the IGFA s Great Marlin Race IGMR came to be from the fortuitous participation of SADSAA President Marius Vermaak at the inaugural IGMR race held at the San Juan International Billfish Tournament in September of last year Vermaak met with Dr Kochevar last July in Kona at the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament to discuss setting up a tagging program He was inspired by the IGMR s goals and wanted to support it in the best way possible having SADSAA hold an IGMR event The first morning of the tournament saw beautiful weather by South African standards perhaps what may be called rough to those lacking substantial sea legs as South African fishermen do It was at 9 40am that Riann Charmers fought a 150 kg 330 lb blue marlin for 35 minutes which was tagged by Darren Grey aboard the Big W The second day of the tournament brought brutal winds from the southwest which forced the tournament to be

    fish tagged in all of the country from 2010 2011 The tournaments the GAMEX 2012 and the Australian International Billfish Tournament AIBT were held on March 9th 17th and March 19th 22nd respectively The first night of the GAMEX tournament all 10 PAT tags were sponsored straight away The tourism site WesternAustralia com announced winnings of 10 000 AUD for the sponsor s whose marlin travels farthest in the Australia race giving an added incentive for people to sponsor the tags The first fish tagged in the GAMEX tourney was caught by Dave Thomson on March 14th After a 20 minute fight Gary Miles tagged Thomson s lively 332 lb 150 kg blue marlin and it was released successfully The next day the first sizable black marlin of the IGMR was tagged after a 25 minute fight with Greg Anderson aboard Inner Vision It weighed in at 300 lbs 135 kg During the morning of the 16th the second black was tagged from the vessel Paradise after a 15 minute fight by Phil Agate who reeled the 176 lb 80 kg fish in The Australian International Billfish Tournament AIBT led to tagging of another billfish during the tournament March 19th 22nd Aboard A Lure Rusty Ellis caught a 330 lb 150 kg blue marlin and it was tagged by Steve Riley on the morning of the last day A few days after the AIBT had ended The Bear hailed out of port and John Prince reeled in and tagged the largest fish a 400 lb blue marlin after a 40 minute fight March 25th Ross Newton got a 300 lb 135 kg blue and wife Tracey Rushford tagged it from the Reel Teaser The final fish was caught and tagged by Bjorn Farley aboard Jaime after a 10 minute fight Farley s blue marlin was 220 lbs 100 kg Though the fishing was slower than usual during both tournaments things heated up after their conclusion and of course perfect weather conditions rolled in During both tourneys several 40 80 lb sailfish and black marlin were caught but they were too small to carry the type of tags we re using All tagged fish were released in great condition Between Exmouth and South Africa a total of 13 tags have been deployed in the Indian Ocean Because this was the first IGMR race to tag both blue and black marlin IGFA Conservation Director Jason Schratwieser was being bombarded with questions from curious participants as to who would travel farther blues or blacks The only sure way to find out for sure is to keep checking the IGMR website for more tags to report Exmouth Western Australia IGFA GMR 10 000 cash prize for the Exmouth fish that travels the longest distance FEBRUARY 2012 Exmouth is located at 21 54 S 114 10 E Exmouth Game Fishing Club took out the award for the most tagged fish in Australian Waters for 2010 11 For such a remote location and small population this
