  • For administrators: What suggestions do you have for other schools/districts beginning KIDS implementation? | Illinoiskids.org
have the skills for KIDS implementation Observation Book Study our regional coach led all Kindergarten teachers in a book study of The Power of Observation Birth to Age 8 This reinforced to teachers that much of the documentation required with KIDS is similar to evidence of learning that is already being collected It also helped to develop skills for observing artifacts specific to KIDS measures at certain times i e calendar recess centers etc Teacher Coaching our regional coach visited Kindergarten classrooms and provided teachers with feedback related to observation opportunities Again this helped our staff realize that much of their instructional day will not need to change in order to document the necessary artifacts for KIDS There also seems to be a greater comfort level with the whole process as a result Documents organizers exemplars our regional coach and several of our teachers have developed a library of organizers and checklists to support teachers in their evidence collection Several of these documents are specific to KIDS measures and times of day in order to focus evidence collection for efficiency Teacher Leaders we ve used the expertise of our early childhood staff primary curriculum coordinators and Kindergarten teachers to guide the process Teachers have benefited from guidance by their peers as opposed to exclusively district directed staff development for KIDS This peer collaboration has given credibility to the process Alignment with Common Core we have clarified at every possible opportunity that the KIDS tool now aligns well in Literacy and Math with the Common Core standards that guide daily instruction Teachers appreciate this overlap and it helps to avoid KIDS being seen as another thing on top of an already overburdened day Alignment with District Practices similar to Common Core we have stated district beliefs and priorities We ve articulated
