announcement for Intelligent of the Year They will tell me who they picked in ranked order and tell me why they think the announcement will go the way they voted Some have reputations on the line since they have selected the awarded city for several years in a row or so they tell me It is a competition within the competition However all will tell me how inspired they were yet again by the quality of these cities and how much they learned They will thank us for choosing them or inviting them to be judges This is no small thing There is a lot of reading and a lot on the line as they do their work over two weeks But the quality of the judges the qualitative part of the ICF selection is high and they are a group that I want to thank since they work behind the scenes It gets tougher for this group each year One other thing I can expect to take place Friday night at around 9 15 PM EST are six communities who will barely speak with me after we make the announcement of Intelligent Community of the Year Some will legitimately tell me that they are happy to have been there because they know what a great achievement it is which is the absolute truth All will tell me that the Summit was productive they learned tons they made good contacts for the future and they told their story to the world ICF is unique and they get that I would expect this because they are doing what I would most likely do These are competitive people and stakeholders in great places award winning places If they weren t they would not be sitting in a beautiful Arcadian Room in Downtown

From Smart to Intelligent Building the Community of the 21st Century These days practically everyone in municipal government knows what a Smart City is thanks to marketing investments by major technology vendors and the support of national and regional government programs Smart Cities Smart City projects make cities work better They apply information and communications technology to accurately monitor measure and control city processes from transportation to water supplies the location of city vehicles to the performance of electric grids Smart Cities are about saving money becoming more efficient and delivering better service to the taxpayer Intelligent Communities Intelligent Communities are different They seek to make better cities places large and small urban and rural where citizens and employers thrive and prosper in the broadband economy Intelligent Communities adopt technology but do not make it their focus Instead they find vision driven community based technology smart solutions to their most urgent problems They make sure they have the broadband and IT infrastructure they need to be competitive But they know it is only a means to an end More of their energy goes into developing a workforce able to do knowledge work More effort goes into crafting an innovation ecosystem
