    2012 Stratford makes smart city book Published Thursday October 25 2012 by MIKE BEITZ Stratford s recent transformation into a digital community is the latest chapter in the city s history of reinvention Now it s a chapter of an actual book Stratford is one of seven cities profiled in Seizing Our Destiny a new book published by the New York based Intelligent Community Forum ICF to highlight 2012 s best communities to live work grow and prosper in and how they got that way It s a real honour to be included in this said Mayor Dan Mathieson Wednesday It just builds on all the successes we ve achieved Those successes linked to Stratford s innovative use of information and communication technologies including broadband Internet are detailed in a chapter entitled Leveraging a history of reinvention It s one of seven chapters in a book devoted to the finalists of the 2012 ICF program which in addition to Stratford include Austin Texas Oulu Finland Quebec City St John New Brunswick Taichung City Taiwan and the 2012 Intelligent Community of the Year Riverside California The book and the lessons it contains about using technology for social and economic development will be front and centre at a symposium at Walsh University in North Canton Ohio this week Like Stratford North Canton is home to an Institute for the Study of the Intelligent Community which is tasked with not only learning about what makes a city smart but also sharing that information with the world It s all about knowledge transfer and promoting best practices said Mathieson who has been invited to Walsh University to take part in a panel discussion today on future community development and the importance of the so called triple helix of business academia and government working together

    announcement of the Smart 21 cities was made Sunday Oct 21 in Riverside Sponsored Paper Government IT Survey Results Reveal Key Data Priorities Selection for the top 21 is based off of nominations submitted from around the world with research conducted by ICF a think tank that studies the economic and social development of the 21st century community Of the 21 nominees for 2013 13 cities have made the Smart21 list before but for the first time since the program began in 2004 communities from Albania and New Zealand have made the list So how did Columbus Mitchell and Philadelphia make the grade Louis Zacharilla cofounder of ICF said each of the three American cities was nominated over several dozen other American cities during the selection process because each city reflected innovation in the workplace the overall theme for next year s program We re going to be looking at how communities are at least attempting to do what is really important which is to make sure that technology is not being used to disintermediate employment or to end employment which it s very good at doing and it should do in the private sector but to actually create opportunities and to create jobs Zacharilla said He said Mitchell overcame challenges such as a severe population drop about 30 percent over a couple of decades but through a combination of a digital literacy program building fiber to the home and utilizing technology to improve farming practices also known as precision farming the city has managed to transform its local economy Philadelphia a city much different from Mitchell in terms of its culture dealt with significant economic challenges particularly since the Great Recession Zacharilla said the city has begun to move forward with programs that focus on digital literacy and has

    by David Brunnen Market analysts by definition take a very sectorised view of the way economies function In daily outputs fueling the financial news and informing political economists they are oft fascinated or terrified by the extraordinary lightness of being digital As I stir sticky syrup into this autumnal breakfast bowl of warm porridge it loses viscosity and starts to flow much like the digitally enabled warming and loosening up of sector behaviour New markets appear and others are absorbed with increasing rapidity Ideas functions and data are integrated into new formats devices and applications In every sector the treacle that slows us everyday hassle that gets in the way of life and work is being eliminated There are no tradeable stocks and shares for cities or towns so we are fed metrics on the health of whole industries and an occasional take on the fortunes of regions particularly where these are characterised by a single industry It is the economics of the firm that dominate analytical effort But if we set aside the prevailing top down sector perspectives of how economies function and ditch our addictions to departmentalised silos we are forced to recognise that we all live at
