    next week Zacharilla says adding that lower cost technologies like satellite and wireless mean that countries don t have to choose between addressing long term and short term needs The good news is you can do both in that it does not take a great deal of investment today Underscoring the point the ICF in 2007 gave its Visionary of the Year award to Afghanistan s Communications Minister Amirzai Sangin for his agency s swift rolling out of broadband infrastructure that was used to support national elections Over a period of 36 months and with the help of international companies including Cisco and Globecomm Systems the agency deployed digital phone service to 11 provinces and connectivity to 34 provincial capitals via satellite and microwave networks in addition to connecting 40 ministries and government offices via fiber optics and microwave ICF Chairman John G Jung called the endeavor true nation building using broadband as one of its technical keystones Cities at the Flipping Point The link between broadband and economic growth and job creation is well documented But broadband is also key to solving a slew of other challenges facing developing regions says Prof Mel Horwitch dean of the Central European University Business School in Budapest Hungary Emerging economies can deal with the issues of megacities pollution health traffic access to government crime and terrorism by becoming smart using broadband and ICT and having an engaged citizenry says Horwitch an expert on entrepreneurship and innovation management Furthermore Horwitch says cities that have yet to adopt broadband and other smart technologies are at an all important tipping point a flipping point as he calls it Cities will flip positively or they will not he says I believe this is an important issue for the emerging world generally If these regions don t come together and understand they need to change and get smart they re going to fall further behind and maybe there s a point of no return The Eastern European region is a case in point Horwitch says It has produced just one contender in the annual crop of 21 nominees for the ICF s Intelligent Community of the Year award That s something Horwitch and colleagues at CEU Business School aim to change With the help of a 7 5 million gift from billionaire investor and philanthropist George Soros the business school is creating an institute for entrepreneurship and innovation part of which will be devoted to the fostering of intelligent communities in the region and beyond Horwitch says Cities Leading the Way In developing and developed countries alike it s typically individual cities or communities that set the standard for use of broadband and ICT with regional and national governments later catching their vision Zacharilla says Examples include the cities of Eindhoven in Holland Taipei in Taiwan Sunderland in the UK and Waterloo Canada These intelligent communities inspire regional and national governments to look at them and say Hey that s a great lab we ve got over

    s position in the global economy I think it s a great reward for the community leaders who have worked on this and tried to position Dakota County as a top notch place to live and work he said Dakota Future made it a goal beginning in 2009 to achieve recognition as an Intelligent Community by 2012 For three years the organization has applied to and been named to the list of Smart21 With tougher competition this year the county was still one of six communities in the United States to receive the award The global competition is pretty intense he said We re still pretty proud to be in that top 21 Soon we hope to crack that Top Seven The Top Seven ranking would mean the county exemplifies the best practices of a 21st century broadband economy embodying how technology is best utilized to enhance a globalized economy according to the Intelligent Community Forum website Coleman said the Top Seven application is more stringent requiring a more detailed community analysis of all that encompasses Dakota s broadband economy The application is due in December A winning strategy Coleman categorized the county s winning strategy in five areas broadband innovation digital inclusion knowledge workers and marketing Fiber optic telecommunications is increasing across the county While the county is growing in size it s not utilizing its entire fiber optic capabilities Coleman said Dakota is now leasing out portions of its unused fiber optic lines to private sector companies This example of public private partnership was appealing to the Intelligent Community Forum Coleman said Dakota Future is there to encourage those types of partnerships We like to plant the seeds and watch them take off Coleman said County libraries fill in the digital inclusion category Coleman said the public access

    Published Tuesday November 15 2011 7 00 am by James Lee Taipei Nov 15 CNA The New Taipei government hosted a forum on intelligent community development in the city Tuesday to draw on the experience of experts in trying to improve its chances of being named one of the top intelligent cities of the year in 2012 Through this forum we can come up with better solutions and learn more approaches to make the community better and more intelligent said New Taipei Mayor Eric Liluan Chu at the forum New Taipei was named one of the Smart21 Intelligent Communities of 2012 in late October the first stage in the Intelligent Community Forum s ICF s annual award cycle to be followed by the naming of the Top Seven Intelligent Communities of the Year We are very happy and honored to be elected one of the Smart21 and we re confident to get into the top seven Chu said Although the rates of Internet access and broadband prevalence in New Taipei are relatively high at 88 percent and 63 percent respectively Chu said the city still needs to improve in narrowing the information gap between rural and urban areas and providing better wireless Internet services According to the ICF s official website the Top Seven announcement will be made on Jan 15 at the annual Pacific Telecommunications Council conference in Honolulu Hawaii The cycle will then conclude in New York City on June 8 during the ICF s annual Building the Broadband Economy Summit where one of the Top Seven will succeed Eindhoven Netherlands as Intelligent Community of the Year 2012 The top 21 include four communities from Europe 10 from North America three from Latin America and four from Asia New Taipei is one of 11 communities appearing on the

    of the Southern Piedmont Technology Council s technology stars awards banquet at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research Earlier this year the Intelligent Community Forum recognized Danville as one of its 21 smart communities for the third year in a row for developing and using broadband infrastructure Broadband is essential for participation in the global economy It s the new railroad he explained The cargo is weightless It s information The broadband economy can empower local communities as it gives even small and midsize companies opportunities for global trade once reserved for large multinational companies Zacharilla said But innovation is essential to compete People want to build intelligent communities not just to attract companies but to keep the next generation around and for maintaining quality of life he said Yet quality of life also has economic consequences as culture is capital and quality attracts quality investments During his visit Zacharilla saw the effort to redevelop the White Mill and heard the stories of Danville technology companies He believes the city is on the right path You can see the rebirth here he said Great advances aren t made by individuals but by environments and intelligent communities create environments that enable constant innovation and creativity he said Ideas are powerful Zacharilla said Ideas are what are going to drive the success of this community going forward The tech council presented Danville City Manager Joe King its Chairman s Award Thursday night for his vision in developing the city s modern broadband and telecommunication infrastructure which EIT South General Manager Michael Duncan said was a key factor in the local economic development renaissance King who s been in Danville nearly 10 years agreed that innovation on all levels from workers on the shop floor to managers and from school to home
