    named one of the Intelligent Community Forum s Smart21 Communities The prestigious annual award recognizes 21 communities worldwide for their development of a broadband system Danville joins five other communities in the United States Arlington County Va Austin Texas Columbus Region Ohio Dakota County Minn and Riverside Calif as well as communities in Canada Mexico Taiwan Australia Finland Greece Germans Brazil and Spain on this year s list We re with some pretty distinguished company City Manager Joe King said A news release from the Intelligent Community Forum notes that Danville was chosen because of its efforts to spur local entrepreneurship attracting companies like US Green Energy and Ecomnets to the city King said the redevelopment of the White Mill was also made possible by the city s investment in a broadband network The White Mill would not be being developed without it broadband accessibility King said The city s school system also earned notice for using the broadband network The public school system offers a full array of educational technology from smart boards to iPads and learning labs in technologies such as robotics and CADD the news release states The Galileo Magnet High School offers instruction focused on technology

    on the Intelligent Community Forum ICF Smart21 list which recognizes places that have embraced broadband technology as a driver of economic and social development In an announcement streamed live over the Internet Friday from Eindhoven Netherlands which was crowned the 2011 Intelligent Community of the Year ICF cofounder Lou Zacharilla named Stratford and 20 other communities to the 2012 edition of the global smart city competition There goes our website again said Zacharilla after calling Stratford s name It was perhaps a reference to an incident at the ICF summit in New York in June when a tweet from Stratford native Justin Bieber cheering on his hometown in the competition led to an overwhelming response from his fans who nearly crashed the ICF website Mayor Dan Mathieson said Friday he was excited to see Stratford s name reappear on the Smart21 list I m very happy once again that we ve been evaluated by an international panel of experts and jurors and found to stack up well and that we re held in very high regard he said Stratford has been here before Last October the New Yorkbased think tank also selected Stratford for its Smart21 list and the city went on to finish among the Top 7 finalists The local ICF committee wants the top honour this year said Mathieson Stratford has never rested well on its laurels he said We still feel there s much work to be done And the city doesn t have to look far for inspiration in its drive to improve on last year s ranking The City of Waterloo was named to the ICF s Top 7 list in 2006 but lost out to Taipei Taiwan for bragging rights as the Intelligent Community of the Year Waterloo came back to capture the title

    the impact of the Broadband I am seeing that dawn in the nation of Australia It is summer here and not only are communities like Whittlesea Melbourne and Brisbane warm this week so is the political climate around them It is in fact white hot because of things which normally remain hidden to the majority of people in community infrastructure items including fiber optics and ICT Australian communities not unlike those from Sweden to America to Asia are in the midst of determining their future Broadband and ICT are at the heart of the matter and central to the outcome This comes as no surprise to the people in Stockholm who claim the world s leading digital economy and broadband penetration and are well along in their transformation However Stockholmers who received the 2009 Intelligent Community of the Year prize may be surprised to see many communities and countries still attempting to determine the merits of broadband and ICT Stockholm thanks to Stokab and a strong sense of the community s future long ago made its decision to ensure the proper amount of access understanding that low cost ubiquitous access was the key So did other communities which today are called intelligent communities While Stokab was the key idea in thinking behind the new and most important infrastructure in Stockholm Australia s vehicle for this historic transformation is a new national broadband network The decision is controversial It is a decision by the national government to build a 43B AUS national broadband network which it is hoped will propel the nation toward the21st Century and allow it to realize the same economic and social benefits that Stockholm Suwon South Korea Dundee Scotland Issy les Moulineaux France and Waterloo Canada are enjoying as they thrive and create jobs It too ultimately
