    2010 ICF dubs Taoyuan smart community Published Friday October 29 2010 7 00 am by Kwangyin Liu Taoyuan County in northern Taiwan has been selected by the New York based Intelligent Community Forum as one of the world s Smart21 Communities for a third consecutive year its magistrate Wu Chih yang said Oct 28 With an international airport Taoyuan is on its way to becoming an aerotropolis where information communication technology applications will be prevalent throughout the county the magistrate said in a public event promoting intelligent application of ICT in the county The Smart21 Communities program is named because each year the ICF chooses 21 communities from around the world it considers as being technologically advanced Out of the 21 candidates seven will be chosen to be the Top Seven Intelligent Communities of the Year in January of next year the organization said Besides Taoyuan Shanghai and Chongqing in mainland China and Jaipur in India are the only other cities in Asia to have made the top 21 list Wu said Taoyuan was the only Asian candidate to make the Smart21 list in 2008 he added Taoyuan County has been engaged in various programs dedicated to promoting government efficiency

    smartest cities in the world according to the Intelligent Community Forum The New York based think tank announced Thursday that Stratford has made its prestigious list of Smart21 Communities of 2011 recognizing those who have embraced the broadband economy and use technology to enhance competitiveness innovation and inclusion within it The ICF considered more than 300 submissions from around the globe before selecting its Top 21 which will now be whittled down to the Top Seven before a single winner is announced next June This is a great achievement for Stratford said Mayor Dan Mathieson yesterday after learning of the designation I m very proud of this It is in part a recognition of the strides the city has made over the past decade in establishing a fibre optic communications backbone and a high speed city wide Wi Fi network We re now starting to see that investment pay off in today s terms in how efficiency is gained and how communications occur he said Being named to the list not only gives Stratford some bragging rights but could also help it attract new technology based businesses to the city he said It allows us to build some forward momentum around developing new sectors of our economy But the city is not stopping at the ICF s Top 21 list he said It will now have to provide a more detailed submission to the ICF as it aims for the top seven list the next step in the process I always strive to move forward said Mathieson suggesting that his ultimate goal is to be the last one standing as the Intelligent Community of the Year This year the ICF is focusing on health care in its consideration of a winning community and the city is in a good position
