    and participating in a global economic and social experience says Zacharilla As the Nobel Prizes recognize outstanding achievements in disciplines such as medicine and literature plus the Peace Prize we also need to pay attention to strategies that will make our communities outstanding says Zarcharilla He is co author of a new book along with ICF colleagues Robert Bell and John Jung Seizing Our Destiny was released in October 2012 and profiles the world s Top 7 Intelligent Communities from the 2012 award program operated by ICF One of the success stories in the book is the community of Oulu Finland Oulu decided to embrace technology and diversify the city s economy In fact Oulu built a reputation as one of Europe s most innovative tech centers developing many firsts in the global technology industry In the past three years the city of 142 000 people created 7 000 new jobs Oulu also worked to develop a climate that fosters innovation and the creation of new companies Seizing Our Destiny reveals a broad range of successful actions that stimulate an economy For example A 10 per cent growth in broadband penetration adds 1 3 per cent to a country s gross domestic product 80 per cent of GDP growth comes from the introduction of new technology 50 per cent of productivity improvements in the private sector come from the use of ICT Scandinavian nations embrace the intelligent communities movement Oulu native and Finland s former Communications Minister Suvi Linden was named the ICF Intelligent Community Visionary of the Year for 2011 and is now Commissioner of the United Nation s Broadband Commission for Digital Development Four Swedish communities were named to the ICF awards shortlist and Stockholm was selected as Intelligent Community of the Year Communities need to work on

    at 5 00 pm Pacific Standard Time The book s title is inspired by Riverside California the 2012 Intelligent Community of the Year As documented in Seizing Our Destiny Riverside was a once proud gem of California s Inland Empire which suffered in the post industrial period to become a poor and undereducated under serviced bedroom community It lost its identify in many ways However as the book reports it transformed its economic and social prospects in little more than a decade Today it has a good wireless telecommunications network offers high speed Internet choices has the fastest access speeds in America and is a major research center It is a model of innovation in the local government sector with its virtual city hall access and technology collaboration among the city private sector and academic institutions It regained its self esteem as a result Riverside has attracted new foreign direct investments including over 13 Million from Winston Global Energy in China transforming the University of California at Riverside into a major research center for battery and clean energy research As we announce the list of Smart21 Intelligent Communities for 2013 we are inviting them on a journey of self discovery over the next year to see which of them can like Riverside show themselves to be worthy of next year s Intelligent Community of the Year honor said ICF Co founder Louis Zacharilla What these communities show is hope and heart in the face of global economic and social challenges Like our book these are stories worth sharing with the world ICF exists to encourage best practices and to recognize communities that are challenged to create prosperity stability and cultural meaning in a world where jobs investment and progress increasingly depend on broadband communications The Smart21 of 2013 The 2013
