    excellence thanks to a combination of a clear vision good planning and strategic partnerships I m holding Stratford up as an example of a small community that when you follow your strategic plan and you collaborate to work together and you use the Kaizen model of continuous improvement you can move yourself forward said the mayor in a conference call from Walsh The mayor was joined by university president Richard Jusseaume and Intelligent Community Forum ICF co founder Lou Zacharilla Kaizen is Japanese for improvement or change for the better as it relates to the ongoing improvement of processes in manufacturing engineering game development and business management I m not saying Stratford s process has been perfect he added but I can tell you it s been far more successful than those that don t have a plan and those that don t work together collaboratively Walsh University will be one of Stratford s newest collaborative partners after the ICF announced Wednesday that the North Canton campus will be home to the second Institute for the Study of the Intelligent Community The first one announced in December will be in Stratford Both Jusseaume and Mathieson highlighted the benefits of a close working relationship between the two communities and particularly their respective universities with student exchanges already in the works For Walsh the Institute will open doors said Jusseaume This is an opportunity for our students to be part of a network of communities around the world he said noting they will better understand that they really are citizens of the world and that they don t need to leave their own communities as has happened in so many places and still be on the cutting edge of what s going on all around them Like its Stratford counterpart which will

    an institute on its campus to help cities adapt to the 21st century economy The institutes at Walsh and in the Canadian city of Stratford Ontario will be the first worldwide to study ways to improve communities stagnating with closed factories and limited business prospects We re going to help make sure that doesn t happen here Walsh President Richard Jusseaume said at a luncheon unveiling the institute We re going to reinvent ourselves Walsh secured the institute through ties to Louis Zacharilla of New York City who graduated from the private Catholic college in 1978 with a degree in English literature He said that when he saw the economy of his hometown of Lyons in upstate New York he developed a taste for helping blighted communities to reinvent themselves in a knowledge based economy In 2004 he co founded the New York City based Intelligent Community Forum which identifies the best practices of intelligent communities such as broadband technology to link residents and serve as a platform for business growth Broadband is like the railroad Zacharilla is fond of saying but the products are information based rather than wood or steel The organization has identified more than 100 communities they can be regions cities or neighborhoods around the world that have used broadband technology plus intellectual and social capital to help reinvent themselves That includes three communities in Ohio Cleveland the Columbus suburb of Dublin and the Northeast Ohio region The last was selected because it is served by the nonprofit Internet provider OneCommunity which acquired fiber from carriers for an ultrabroadband network for government and institutional members In December Stratford was named the organization s first institute The city of 31 000 has employed a city owned company to lay 60 kilometers about 37 3 miles of optical

    share best practices of communities around the globe that are embracing technology as a key ingredient for economic and social development The annual award became a full fledged program in 2004 Editor s Note The Intelligent Communities Forum blogs on Govtech com s sister website DigitalCommunities com Robert Bell co founder of the Intelligent Community Forum said Thursday Jan 19 that Austin and Riverside both are noteworthy for using technology to address gaps in their local economies Riverside once was an economy built around citrus growing but Bell said once that boom faded the community struggled to adapt as the distribution industry trucking rail and warehousing took over and brought with it a swath of low income jobs City leaders decided to pursue a different strategy built around the technology sector and leveraged the cache of the University of California at Riverside and other colleges in the area to help accomplish that goal Riverside has worked with the universities to found business accelerators incubators and other programs A nonprofit called SmartRiverside is helping to transform the community into a hub for the high tech sector The organization works on digital divide initiatives business development e waste and wireless Eighty percent of city now is covered by fiber and wireless A 1 6 billion public works program also is working to modernize old water and electricity infrastructure along with improvements to transportation systems and public safety Riverside also was a top seven intelligent community finalist in 2011 In Austin s case historically the city has had a thriving high tech sector but Bell said officials have been quick to realize a flaw much of Austin s population hasn t been participating in the technology economy Consequently according to the Intelligent Community Forum Austin s city government and the area s Chamber
