    showers in the Corinthia Palace Marina Hotel at the Corinthia Beach Resort The Corinthia Hotel St Georges Bay and toilet flushing volume reduction by the Rafael Spinola hotel amongst others The amount of water being saved is enough to meet all the water needs of two medium sized 4 hotels and a large factory MBB Project Manager Geoffrey Saliba said Constant innovations and decrease in cost of technology are allowing industry to become more efficient and effective in its water consumption A considerable body of knowledge has been built by industry leaders on which technology works best in which circumstances sharing this knowledge base widely is allowing industry to reduce its consumption significantly The MBB s EU LIFE Investing in Water Project audited enterprises systems identified their water saving potential and made recommendations on how to increase efficiency based on existing best practice Training was also provided for technical staff on the most attractive water saving solutions Efficient use of water is particularly important for Malta one of the world s top ten water scarce countries Water scarcity has led to over exploitation of groundwater Malta s only natural source of freshwater with over 50 more groundwater being extracted every year than is sustainable 1 Yet groundwater is relied upon by various sectors with treated groundwater also forming part of the tap water provided by WSC Tackling the threats facing Malta s groundwater requires all stakeholders to take action Industry and hotels proved that there are practical and economically feasible water saving solutions The very large volume of water being saved shows that demand management can be an important tool to counter water scarcity ensuring that consumption is as efficient as possible stated Ing Marco Cremona water expert engaged by the MBB s EU LIFE Investing in Water Project The

  • MBB, MHRA Green Economy recommendations – ‘Recycle water’
    in the private waste water treatment sector Grey water treatment is the recycling of waste water from showers and wash hand basins to 2nd class water suitable for flushing toilets irrigation or other 2nd class water uses The technology is available on the local market with plants costing from EUR 15 000 to EUR 45 000 and offering an average of 4 years return on investment Space requirements are minimal and can be met by most hotels existing plants have been fitted into a pump room and even a large shaft The key stumbling block to current investment in this technology is lack of awareness amongst operators inadequate plumbing in existing buildings and the fact that some other projects might offer more attractive returns such as investments in energy efficient heating and lighting said Ing Joseph Restall MHRA Environmental Committee Chairperson A grant policy facilitating operators investment could help overcome these obstacles and lead to a widespread implementation of grey water treatment by hotels The recommendations support the adoption of a policy encouraging the voluntary implementation of grey water treatment twinned with a financing system for environmental upgrade projects for hotels The policy should aim at a widespread adoption of
