  • Climate Change is bad news for water scarce Malta
    concern in this scenario is the decrease in rainfall Rain which is absorbed into the earth and slowly filters its way down into aquifers is the only source of recharge for groundwater bodies A decrease in rainfall will decrease this recharge and lower the amount of quality groundwater that can be sustainably extracted This is likely to have a significant impact on Malta as much of Malta s freshwater comes from groundwater bodies This water is mixed with reverse osmosis water and forms 45 of the water provided by the Water Services Corporation 2 Groundwater is also heavily relied upon by agriculture and to a lesser extent by various industries The European Environmental Agency has noted that Europe will need to adapt to cope with the increased temperatures and reduced amount of naturally available freshwater One of the ways it will need to adapt is in its use of water Decreasing amounts of freshwater make it all the more important to ensure that our consumption of water is as efficient and sustainable as possible The Malta Business Bureau s EU LIFE Investing in Water Project is helping businesses and hotels reduce their water consumption It is doing this by providing expert assistance to identify water saving opportunities in their current operation To achieve this end the first step is to cut down on unnecessary waste Showers with high flow rates and toilet flushings with excessive volumes are two excellent examples of facilities which can be easily controlled Other solutions include rainwater harvesting which in many commercial ventures is an attractive and easily implemented measure to further help make water consumption more sustainable The EU LIFE Investing in Water Project has recently completed a set of water audits amongst businesses and hotels The audits revealed that in several cases there is

  • MBB project website transformed into water-saving tool
    how to do so As of today the MBB has provided enterprises with easy to use powerful and freely accessible online guidance on how best to save water Water Audits carried out by the project have shown that 85 of businesses and hotels could either tweak existing or adopt new water saving solutions The savings potential of these enterprises averages 10 15 on current consumption The online self assessment tool could help viewers realise this potential It allows viewers to enter water consumption data and then presents an analysis The self assessment concludes by recommending specific water saving solutions and calculates the quantity and cost of water these solutions could save A report is generated which can be downloaded or printed for future reference In addition to the self assessment tool the EU LIFE Investing in Water Project website has been updated with a list of water saving solutions The solutions featuring on the website are the most effective the simplest to install and maintain the easiest to purchase locally and perhaps most importantly those with a short to medium term payback period To share best practice and inspire similar water saving projects the project website has also been updated

    audits carried out by the EU LIFE Investing in Water Project over the past year Best practice behaviour witnessed by the project includes spotting and stopping leaks which would have gone undetected equipment being tweaked to waste less water management told of wasteful equipment and water consumed sparingly Through the workshops the project wishes to encourage and share best practice amongst employees commented Geoffrey Saliba the MBB s EU LIFE Investing in Water Project Manager The water audits have shown that 85 of businesses and 75 of hotels could significantly reduce their water consumption by adopting simple water saving solutions Employees can play a key role in supporting these initiatives and make an easy task out of keeping consumption efficient Additionally many of the water saving solutions identified for businesses and hotels such as restrictors and aerators for showers and taps water saving bags for toilets and harvesting of rainwater can also be applied in households Mr Delia APS bank Chairman highlighting the bank s satisfaction at financially supporting the project and stated APS Bank has been active for more than a decade raising public awareness on the efficient use of scarce water resources in the Maltese Islands It initially

    be evaluated to identify water saving opportunities and specific water saving solutions will be recommended The project team will then remain available for consultation on the implementation of these solutions This is the second set of Water Audits offered to enterprises by the project The first set of 40 carried out earlier this year was quickly booked by hotels of all categories and businesses from various sectors including manufacturing pharmaceutical financial and distribution This first set showed that there is tremendous potential for water savings locally stated Ing Marco Cremona Water Expert to the MBB s EU LIFE Investing in Water Project Almost all of the 40 enterprises audited earlier this year could easily save water translating into many thousands of euros and tons of water in savings The financial savings alone are an attractive incentive to water savings However enterprises saving water can also take satisfaction knowing that they are protecting a nationally scarce resource Malta is acknowledged as one of the world s top ten water scarce countries This already scarce resource is threatened by over extraction with around 50 more groundwater taken every year than is sustainably available Over extraction impacts on the quality of remaining groundwater

    Project The project is recommending standard flow rates of 7 litres per minute for showers 5 litres per minute for wash hand basins and 6 litres volume for flushing toilets Other solutions which could yield substantial savings include rainwater harvesting and the treatment of grey water from baths showers and wash hand basins in hotels to be used for flushing toilets and irrigation Malta s only viable source of natural freshwater is groundwater Supply however is limited and groundwater bodies are over exploited and polluted with nitrates This has led to a deterioration in groundwater bodies Addressing business executives present for the conference Peter Gammeltoft Head of the European Commission DG ENV s Water Protection Unit stressed on the importance that action is taken immediately If water scarcity is not tackled now it will just get worse The Water Framework Directive requires that member states adopt a pricing mechanism which acts as a motivator for efficient use and gives an adequate contribution to cost recovery for water services It also requires that member states ensure that their freshwater reserves are maintained or restored to Good Status Manuel Sapiano a hydrologist at the Malta Resources Authority spoke on the importance that consumers and businesses manage strategically and carefully their water consumption To maintain our natural water resources in a healthy state it is important that all consumers manage their water consumption carefully and sustainably Water saving projects such as the EU LIFE Investing in Water Project compliment national efforts at improving the sustainable use of water and the MRA welcomes this Konstantina Toli an Executive at GWP Med Alter Aqua Programme discussed results of a pan Mediterranean project encouraging the use of rainwater and grey water as a more sustainable alternative to processed first class water Dr Fabio Masi PHD from
