    school where I was then employed by the attached university He could be impressed by my then near perfect HbA1c s But he didn t believe my explanations about how I got them Extreme carb restriction And he wasn t helpful when I want to talk through crazy radical theories about how to tweak my care When I would ask for tests which had no diagnostic value he would refuse to order them In the end I didn t see what was the point in having a research endocrinologist if he insisted on doing everything by the book He was intelligent for sure but he wasn t willing to use his intelligence to help me My third primary care physician was a doctor in a small town and I started seeing him when I moved to a university there I met him during my wife s first pregnancy He was the guy who prescribed oxygen for illegal midwives He was great He had clearly used too much LSD during the 60 s The way visits at his office would go is that he would spend half an hour telling me about his favorite youtube videos and then he would write me prescriptions for whatever I want I became somewhat more lax about my disease management and my academic career really took off Then two very bad things happened to me basically simultaneously My doctor retired and I took a job at Caltech During all this time with my three doctors I always had a prescription for Lantus insulin I used regular insulin bought OTC as fast acting insulin The D O made some threats against me but they were never of taking away my Lantus My endo and the LSD doctor both made me feel very safe Now that I

    to find one who like my second or third doctors and unlike my first view their function as being to help patients rather than serve as their executioners If the only doctors I can find are of the variety that tell me that my life is worse less than that of a diabetic housecat of course I ll stick to the NPH R regimen and die when the stuff is
