newly diagnosed patients but without the usual side effects One caution though is that the drug is still only in a preliminary stage of development phase 2 Another is that other similar approaches such as the work of Dr Zhao and colleagues discussed earlier on this forum have been able to lift the continuing autoimmune attack in established cases of type 1 diabetes but without significant restoration of beta cell function 1 Dr Faustman ultimately encountered the same barrier once the autoimmunity is removed there is some very slight restoration of function in beta cells but too small to be clinically significant The huge number of type 1 diabetics with whole organ grafts and powerful immunosuppression taken every day for years on end but with no improvement in blood sugar control testifies to that problem To have a significant clinical impact the intervention would have to be at a very early stage of the disease preferably at onsent 1 Yong Zhao et al Reversal of Type 1 Diabetes via Islet Beta Cell Regeneration BMC Medicine vol 10 n0 3 2012 The actual results reported in the article do not support the claim in the title Follow Ups Re New T1DM

results and is currently getting ready for phase II The phase I trial did not use an adequate amount of substance BCG to remove the autoimmunity nor did they expect restoration of beta cell function at this very low level of treatment Therefore in the case of Dr Faustman s human clinical trial research it remains to be seen if the removal of the autoimmunity with her treatment will result

Faustman really She has been on your BCG dead end for over 13 years BCG will not work has not worked though it has been tried in both Israel and at the Barbara Davis center with zero results I contacted Faustman in 2001 after her JCI article ran she assured me that trials would be complete by 2003 I saved that email for years What a joke Follow Ups Re

with phase I You may certainly count her research out and a dead end I believe you are wrong but other private donors are still behind her because she is heading into phase II Yes it has taken way too long for her human trials to complete but that is because of the lack of funding This is one project that is backed almost entire through private philanthropy almost unheard
