    substantially Continually providing additional road infrastructure alone is not going to solve the congestion that this increase in heavy vehicle traffic will result in Improved management of this traffic also needs to be considered as this can greatly assist in reducing current congestion and potential future congestion as well as reducing the need for additional infrastructure In addition it is the intention of the port to consolidate the monitoring management and inspection of heavy vehicle traffic entering and leaving the port precinct and ITS will play a crucial role in facilitating this This workshop is scheduled for 24 June 2015 to be hosted at the Port Academy in Durban Current best practice is to use Intelligent Transport Systems to manage this traffic ITS has also been recommended at container terminals to improve their internal safety and efficiency and this is currently being implemented The Intelligent Transport Society of South Africa plans to hold a workshop at the Port Academy in Durban to present the types of ITS that are used in a port environment to improve efficiency safety and security The idea is to expose ports officials and port users to the benefits of ITS ITS applications includes Weigh in motion Vehicle measurement in motion Under vehicle surveillance in motion Number plate recognition CCTV surveillance Variable message signs Central driver vehicle and container database for monitoring and information dissemination SMS and email information dissemination to port users Real time satellite monitoring of vehicles and cargo Integrated systems for cargo interchange Automated speed and vehicle counting stations Automated inspection equipment Weather stations Current efficiency safety and security challenges facing ports around the world will be presented and the above available ITS solutions will be presented as options that can be considered for the improvement to safety security at ports Suppliers and
