  • Why James? — Fondazione James Non Morirà
we met He had a very serious form of leukemia that required constant blood transfusions and anti hemorrage medicines Luckily one of has had his blood type so we tried to whatever possible being also supported by a team of Italian experts who suggested us from Italy how to proceed Unfortunately blood tests confirmed the condition of the sickness that was in its final stage leaving us no hope Anyway we decided not to give up One evening we saw James in his mother s arms looking as if he had no more strength or capacity of reacting He passed the night and the morning after he could receive another blood transfusion The following day as we got up we heard a little voice calling our names it was James running towards us his little arms open wide He hugged and kissed and wanted to stay with us always curious because of our white skin touching our faces laughing and repeating our names We thought that was a true miracle just a blood transfusion had changed the situation so much but the miracle did not last long two more weeks the he passed away The memory of those little arms stretching towards us while he was calling our names remained deep inside us Even without closing the eyes whenever we go back to him with our minds his memory is very alive we hear his little voice we see his little arms open A few months later Francesco took his decision and moved to Adwa where he soon understood that the construction of a Village for the orphan children and the help for the malnourished could be the activity to which he there and we here could dedicate to So when we decided to create the Foundation it came as

  • The roots — Fondazione James Non Morirà
he lived and that where always involving children So after repeating the experience several times he felt he was personally called to do something He therefore decided to move to Ethiopia in October 2002 After a short time he realized that the ones who were the first victims of poverty and abandonment were the children and that it was then necessary to dedicate to them doing something real and concrete for their present and for their future This is the way the idea of building the Children s Village was born But to do this a lot of money was necessary and we couldn t make it alone So we decided to create the Foundation So that others could reach us in an effort that otherwise would have been impossible Many times with Francesco we remember about one evening we were sitting on a stone after sunset the scraper had just finished digging the ground where the Village was supposed to be built We were considering how much it was going to cost It was nearly one million euros we looked at each other speechless had we been too unwise We were not afraid though somehow we knew we would have made it And this is how it was That Christmas we had asked Francesco to give us a special gift writing to us the deep motivations that had pushed him towards that choice of life We think it is nice to share some of them so to better understand the roots of the Foundation I m convinced life s a too precious gift to let it just go away like sand through your fingers I did not miss anything and in the moment you realize this you have the duty to turn to those who own just their nothing

  • The children's Village — Fondazione James Non Morirà
also built a canteen where all the children can eat together so to make of their meals an occasion of meeting and sharing In this way we can also check their food prepare daily menus and guarantee the necessary variety of food Always inside the Village we built a stable with two cows that provide daily fresh milk for all the children The Village has a wall all around as a protection from animals in particular hyenas to guarantee integrated safety as required by the local authorities there are armed guards 24 hours a day More than 50 people work in the Village guardians drivers teachers coordination staff In this way the Village can consistently contribute to support and develop the local economy through the people employed and through all the needs connected to its management and coordination and the consequent purchase of goods and services THE HOSPITALITY FOR ORPHAN CHILDREN In Ethiopia there are many orphans for the most different reasons among which the death of both parents because of Aids or just of the mother previously abandoned by the husband Both Aids and Tuberculosis make many victims The phenomenon is also connected to the high mortality of women in childbirth 1 on 9 usually caused by infection due to total lack of hygienic conditions In the villages totally isolated in the mountains made just by a few huts far from the most important centers the situation is even more dramatic and the lack of breast feeding often means the death of the baby When the parents die even very young children must provide to their own survival because relatives are usually either far away or cannot take care of them because of the many children already present in the family It is very common therefore to find families
