    sort of symbol for all the other persons who together with him can have benefit from this aid Money we collect for the distance adoptions is not given directly to the family except in few specific circumstances but is used in various ways following the specific situation We mainly use this money to create positive situations allowing the development and improvement of life conditions of the mothers and or parents of the kids we assist through the creation of job opportunities in order to enable the parents themselves to take good care of their own children With this purpose we have conceived the work projects and working groups are dedicated to these projects in a modified form of microcredit adapted to the local reality Women meet in these working groups where participants are selected with their own agreement in order to create well integrated groups We provide initial funding to start the project Then every three months we verify and assess the project development and we provide a further funding of a lower amount In this way the funding is linked to the progress and development of the project and the women are encouraged to work hard to make it successful and autonomous for the moment when the funding is ceased New projects are continually started even in agreement with the local Authorities as they create new job opportunities for the benefit of the entire community Most of these projects are socially useful such as the cleaning of the Pediatric Department of the local Hospital the preparation of meals for inpatient children in this Hospital etc Other jobs have been created within the Village itself and mothers and fathers have been hired for posts of watchmen farmers gardeners cleaning staff kitchen staff maintenance staff etc In few specific cases money

    the children who receive letters and those who don t Moreover it would create false expectations The same applies to presents cloths toys shoes etc sent to the children All what is sent as a present will be used for the community because the Village actually is an enlarged family as it is common in the African culture All the adopters of a child from the village should be aware and agree on the above We send the adopters every year a short but detailed and personal report on every adopted child and a couple of photos per year generally one is sent in July and the other at Christmas in order to let the adopter see how the child grows up For the orphans of the village we take care directly of some important aspects of their growing up Nutrition we ensure their diet includes proteins eggs or meat vegetables and fruit we have a kitchen garden within the village covering most of our needs and that they have a healthy and varied diet in order to prevent the risk of some of the diseases diffused in the region such as tuberculosis Personal hygiene our children are educated to take daily showers and to wash their hands before every meal Healthcare our orphans are all vaccinated A physician is regularly present in the Village and we have all the fundamental medicines Moreover we educate our children in the main principles of healthcare prevention Education we ensure that all of our children attend and complete the school cycle and once they have completed it attend professional training courses adequate to their personal capabilities and to the actual local job opportunities mechanic electrician carpenter hairdresser tailor etc School education is integrated with English courses organized within the village and with the

    would have to devote to this sort of reporting would be taken away from the real purpose of our activity to give actual help to as many people as possible Every year at Christmas we send a photo of the adopted child together with a letter with information on our activity and a report on the amounts received Those who give us their e mail address will also receive 2 3 times a year updated information on our activity Adopters frequently ask to have personal and direct relationships with the child sending photos letters toys cloths etc and they expect the child to reply to their letters We are sorry to say that this is really not feasible both for practical problems problems in the mail no internet connection as the children do not have a computer language problems etc and for cultural and educational problems creation of false expectations jealousy between the children etc Our children know that in Italy and in other countries they have friends who care for them and are willing to help them Those who are willing to give us support in kind mainly cloths to be used for all the children we assist should contact our Office in Rome to receive instructions on how to mail the parcel directly to Ethiopia Adopters should know that the child assigned to them may be changed in the course of the adoption In general this event is normal and completely positive as it indicates the success of our Work projects namely that the life conditions of the family have improved and the child doesn t need help anymore In this case the adopter will receive the photo of another child and the request to help another needy family It may also happen that the family decides to

    deficiency and characterized by thinness with swollen face hands and feet Francesco has called these children the little skeletons as they are only skin and bones sometimes with huge disproportionate eyes sometimes with small eyes with no life The Emergency Center can accommodate up to 15 20 children at a time together with their mothers It has its own kitchen and a storehouse Younger children and newborns are accommodated in a separate facility The staff of the Center is made of a local physician present three afternoons a week a registered nurse two assistant nurses two women who are there to help the mothers the cleaning staff and the kitchen staff The main treatment for these children is food therapy which may have a variable duration but in most cases requires some months of inpatient stay Special milk enriched with vitamins and oil in small but numerous daily doses is given to younger children Milk sugar and a varied diet meat eggs fresh vegetables together with the local bread injera are given to older children For all of them clean and safe water Children arriving to the Center are often in very severe conditions complicated by Aids or other diseases tuberculosis malaria etc In these cases food therapy is more difficult as it happens that their body refuses food In the most severe cases children need antibiotic therapy and they must be hydrated by intravenous infusion When we have several of these cases we are obliged to send the children to the local hospital where they are assisted in turn by women of our staff The Emergency Center also provides assistance and treatment to the children of the Village It has become a point of reference in the area Children are referred to the Center also from the local Hospital
