  • Japanese Vegetarian Buddhist Cuisine Nourishes the Soul 15 Centuries Later: Press: About: Japan Society
    s hojin ryori only plants are used No meat no fish only grains and vegetables Some say vegetables are a gift from God from nature whereas meat and fish are a secondary gift Humans cannot make for example tomatoes Only through sunshine water and air are they created as a gift of food We are able to live thanks to products that plants create for us and without them we cannot that is the absolute truth Shojin ryori is rooted in this fact So we shojin ryori practitioners endeavor to take time with and cultivate passion for the plants that provide us with this truth Shojin Ryori is a type of Washoku traditional Japanese cuisine which was designated an intangible cultural heritage asset in 2013 by UNESCO in recognition of its uniqueness and use of natural locally sourced ingredients such as rice fish vegetables and edible wild plants As a master of Shojin Ryori Toshio Tanahashi has received grants from the Japanese government as part of the Cool Japan initiative to preserve and promote Japanese culture food and technology around the globe Born in Japan in 1960 Toshio Tanahashi trained at the age of 27 for three years at the Gesshinji Temple in Shiga prefecture near Kyoto a nunnery famous for its abbess excellent Shojin cooking In 1992 he opened his restaurant Gesshinkyo in Tokyo In 2000 Vogue Nippon ran a series of articles featuring his cooking and he was invited to demonstrate his style of cooking at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London In the same year Tanahashi s story was dramatized for a TV series entitled Honmamon The True Thing by NHK Broadcasting and he introduced Chinese traditional Shojin style from China in a program on NHK BS Tanahashi has been featured by The New York Times The Sunday Times The Japan Times Financial Times and Telegraph Magazine He is the author of Shojin Bunka Publishing Bureau March 2002 an illustrated recipe book in Japanese which outlines his philosophies of Shojin cooking After he closed Gesshinkyo in 2007 Tanahashi established Zecoow Culinary Institute in February 2008 He teaches culinary arts and design as a director at Kyoto University of Art and Design since April 2009 His books include Shojin Wonder of Vegetables 2003 and The Power of the Vegetable the Time for Shojin is Now 2008 More at www zecoow com Founded in 1907 Japan Society is a multidisciplinary hub for global leaders artists scholars educators and English and Japanese speaking audiences At the Society more than 100 events each year feature sophisticated topically relevant presentations of Japanese art and culture and open critical dialogue on issues of vital importance to the U S Japan and East Asia An American nonprofit nonpolitical organization the Society cultivates a constructive resonant and dynamic relationship between the people of the U S and Japan Shojin Ryori Zen Cuisine for Body Mind takes place Thursday February 27 at 6 30 pm Japan Society is located at 333 East 47th Street between

    grow our activities enormously to fulfill our mission to enhance mutual understanding between the U S and Japan Wilbur Ross Chairman of Japan Society said I cannot imagine a relationship more in line with Japan Society s mission than to work with an artist in developing a new cultural institution in Japan whose activities will broaden American understanding of Japanese culture I hope this will become a template for future relationships with other leading Japanese artists and cultural organizations For the inauguration of the arts complex Japan Society and the Foundation will create a new noh drama drawn from a historical incident that took place in the Odawara region in the late 16th century around Sen no Rikyu one of the most influential tea masters known for wabi cha style tea ceremony The premiere is planned for fall 2016 on the stages of the Society s Lila Acheson Wallace Auditorium in New York and the Foundation s new facilities in Japan Future collaborations between the two organizations will include residency programs to provide American performing artists with opportunities to spend time in the Foundation s noh theater for research and experimentation among other initiatives With an emphasis on visual and performing arts from classical to contemporary and spanning genres The Odawara Art Foundation has produced several exhibitions and live performances including Origins of Art Science Architecture History Religion Marugame Genichiro Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art Kagawa November 2010 October 2011 Sanbaso Sogetsu Theater Tokyo December 2010 Sonezaki Shinju Kanagawa Arts Theater Yokohama March 2011 The Foundation s production of Sanbaso divine dance performed by Japan s celebrated stage film and television star Mansai Nomura with scenic and costume design by Mr Sugimoto was presented in New York in March 2013 by Japan Society and the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum This unprecedented artistic collaboration drew sold out audiences and favorable critical response Most recently the Foundation organized the acclaimed European tour of the National Bunraku Puppet Theater for the production of Sonezaki Shinju The Love Suicides at Sonezaki which traveled to Madrid Rome and Paris Odawara Art Foundation founder Hiroshi Sugimoto was born in 1948 in Tokyo and lives in both New York and Japan Mr Sugimoto s art blurs the lines between photography painting installation and architecture His iconic photographs bridge Eastern and Western ideologies tracing the origins of time and societal progress Notable series include Dioramas 1976 Theaters 1978 and Seascapes 1980 In 1999 Deutsche Guggenheim commissioned and presented an exhibition of his series Portraits 1999 His work is held in museums and collections including the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum New York The Metropolitan Museum of Art New York Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo The National Gallery London the National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo Smithsonian Institute of Art Washington D C and Tate London Currently his retrospective at Leeum the prestigious art museum in Seoul is on view He is also known for his significant collection of traditional Japanese art works and ritual artifacts which he has donated

    World award of the Japan Chamber of Commerce in New York In 2004 Professor Curtis was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun Gold and Silver Star by the Emperor of Japan one of the highest honors bestowed by the Japanese government Professor Curtis received his Ph D from Columbia University in 1969 and he has been on the Columbia University faculty since 1968 Jia Qingguo is Professor and Associate Dean of the School of International Studies of Peking University He received his Ph D from Cornell University in 1988 He has taught in University of Vermont Cornell University University of California at San Diego University of Sydney in Australia as well as Peking University He was a research fellow at the Brookings Institution between 1985 and 1986 a visiting professor at the University of Vienna in 1997 and a fellow at the Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution in 2001 and 2002 He is Vice President of the Chinese American Studies Association He is also a member of Standing Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People s Political Consultative Conference and a member of the Standing Committee of the Central Committee of the China Democratic League He is serving on the editorial board of several international academic journals He has published extensively on U S China relations relations between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan Chinese foreign policy and Chinese politics Alan Romberg is distinguished fellow and the director of the East Asia program at the Henry L Stimson Center Before joining Stimson in September 2000 he enjoyed a distinguished career working on Asian issues both in and out of government including 27 years in the State Department with over 20 years as a U S Foreign Service Officer Romberg was the principal deputy director of the State Department s Policy Planning staff principal deputy assistant secretary of state for public affairs and deputy spokesman of the department He served in various capacities dealing with East Asia including director of the Office of Japanese Affairs member of the Policy Planning staff for East Asia and staff member at the National Security Council for China He served overseas in Hong Kong and Taiwan Additionally Romberg spent almost 10 years as the CV Starr Senior Fellow for Asian Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations and was special assistant to the secretary of the navy Romberg holds an M A from Harvard University and a B A from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University Yoshihide Soeya is Professor of political science and international relations at the Faculty of Law of Keio University He served as the Director of the Institute of East Asian Studies of the same university for six years until September 2013 and currently is the Director of its Center for Contemporary Korean Studies From September 2013 to January 2014 Dr Soeya resides in Washington D C as a Japan Scholar of the
