    such a trip has become easier but it s still a journey that many won t get to make Fortunately there are more than 300 fine Japanese gardens located outside of Japan At least 25 of them are located in Australia In an effort to identify which of Australia s gardens are particularly noteworthy we distributed a survey to garden experts there The survey posed one question What are the highest quality Japanese gardens in Australia We encouraged participants to apply their own definition of the word quality Unfortunately Australia is a large country with a small population and there are probably less than a half dozen experts there who have visited more than two or three of their Japanese gardens It is hoped that this survey will encourage our Australia readers to get out and about When we do this survey again in a few years we will hopefully have more data to work with and the results will be more statistically accurate 1 The Melbourne Zoo Japanese Garden JGarden Data Elliot Avenue PO Box 74 Parkville Victoria 3052 According to our survey results this garden ranks 1 out of 25 gardens making it Australia s highest quality Japanese garden Built in 1990 it is modest in size and located within the grounds of the Royal Melbourne Zoo The garden features azumaya a waterfall and a winding yari mizu stream 2 Univ of Southern Queensland JGarden Data West Street Toowoomba Queensland 4350 Also known as Ju Raku En this large stroll garden was opened in 1989 It features several sub gardens of various styles 3 Cowra Japanese Garden JGarden Data Binni Creek Road P O Box 248 Cowra New South Wales 2794 This five hectare kaiyu shiki stroll style garden was opened in 1979 It is designed to embody

    gardens This month s garden is the Japanese Tea Garden at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco http www jgarden org gardens asp ID 268 the venerable garden in one of the most beautiful cities in the world JGARDEN NEWS JGarden Incorporates as Non Profit We made a big leap at the end of last year and decided to incorporate the JGarden project into a non profit organization This is an important step for the database and the web site as it will allow us to potentially apply for grants and function as a 501 c 3 charitable organization This shouldn t mean any changes in the near term but we hope that over the long term this will be a more vibrant project with more choices more timely updates and better information Hands on Japanese Garden Class Beginning February 2 2003 Mike Yamakami will begin offering a Japanese garden construction and maintenance class in Marietta Georgia The class will cover basic pruning bamboo fence construction stone placement knots tree transplanting and much more The class will meet the first Sunday of each month beginning on February 2 at 9am For more information see http www jgarden org features asp

    Kawara are made by small and medium sized companies located throughout Japan The kiln is called a kawara gama and the person who lays the tile is called a kawara ya I was recently asked where to buy Japanese roofing tiles Ironically when I lived in Japan I lived in an apartment right next door to a roofing tile factory for a year but I was at a bit of a loss about where to get these tiles outside Japan But over the holidays I ran across a note from Mike Yamakami on GardenWeb responding to the same question Here s what Mike suggests Contact JETRO the Japan External Trade Organization JETRO is the overseas trade promotion agency for the Japanese government JETRO has several regional branches in North America including New York Atlanta Houston Chicago Denver San Francisco and Los Angeles You might also consider trying to contact the Kyoto Kawara Koji Kyodo Kumiai Kyoto Prefectural Kawara Installers Union and or the Zen nihon Kawara Kojigyo Renmei National Kawara Construction Union through JETRO Mike had some other suggestions Kawara are extremely heavy A conventional 2x4 framed roof may not be sufficient if it spans much surface area You will
