    and on site studies It also offers the related art lessons religeous experiences and exclusive opportunities to talk to local people who actually live in and or work with such traditional environments There will also be a design workshop and a seminar with Kyoto University faculty and students supplemented with class lectures and assignments The class is so intense and involving many people that the applicants must be strongly motivated to learn the subjects You should be prepared to walk a lot in the hot and humid weather and observe some local manners as well In return you will have an extraordinary learning experience as all former participants testified that they did Kyoto is an ancient capital of Japan with over 1200 years of history and is still a treasure trove of traditional gardens and architecture Students will stay in Kyoto Travelers Inn which is conveniently located in the middle of a cultural area of the city Many historical interests are within walking distance from there or easily accessible by public transit system All students will be letter graded There is no prerequisites but some environmental design background may be helpful to participate in discussions and to complete the assignments

    Keep up with JGarden changes and news Subscribe to our monthly newsletter Features and Announcements JOJG Announces Advanced Pruning Workshop Last Updated 3 27 2004 Douglas Roth publisher of the Journal of Japanese Gardening and Tamao Goda tree pruning specialist from Tokyo will be leading this now annual event at the Breezewood Farm and Garden Breezewood is a mature Japanese garden that has been under development for five decades It is a private garden that is owned by Thorne and Hannah Gould The workshop participants use their skills to help improve the condition of the garden The workshop focuses on advanced techniques This will be a working hands on workshop for JOJG subscribers who have already mastered basic pruning skills The 5 acre Japanese garden has at least 100 trees and shrubs that require pruning There are 30 mature pines many more than 20 ft in height Be prepared to work All students are expected to bring or purchase their own aluminum tripod ladders Roth Tei en may provide some tripod ladders for rental The cost is 225 per person and class size in limited to the first eight registrants Upon registration an information packet will be mailed with directions
