  • Astronaut John W. Young - John Glenn Deserves to Fly, and So Does John Young by Roger Guillemette
certain death during re entry into the atmosphere Glenn and his spacecraft survived and he returned as a instant celebrity the most recognizable face on the planet Hailed as a national hero Glenn was transformed into The American Who Finally Equaled The Soviets However just like his Cold War counterpart Yuri Gagarin the first man in space John Glenn was designated as a national treasure a man deemed too valuable as a public relations tool to risk allowing him to fly in space again The Kennedy Administration and NASA officials fearing that losing Glenn in a mishap would derail public support of Kennedy s national goal of a manned lunar landing permanently benched him Now at the young old age of 76 John Glenn is getting a second chance He s earned it Some pundits have derided Glenn s selection as a public relations gimmick pure politics So what Pure politics was the only reason that Glenn was denied a second flight in the first place Glenn is not simply flying as an American icon instead he has willingly consented to be poked and prodded as a human guinea pig a Septuagenarian Senatorial Specimen for Geriatric Studies Several members of today s Astronaut Corps have mumbled under their breaths that Shuttle seats are too scarce and should be occupied by someone younger someone like themselves or one of their fellow mythic heroes Get over it When your resumes and track record of dedication and service to your country matches that of Senator Glenn then you have the right to gripe not until Most likely and as they well know Glenn s inclusion on the mission will not displace any current astronaut scheduled to fly instead he will be an additional passenger a crew consisting of seven astronauts instead of just six However if geriatric studies is truly the goal of this mission with an undercoating of repaying old debts thrown in for good measure then NASA Administrator Daniel Goldin must consider righting another injustice Instead of brushing aside the suggestion with a joke Goldin should add another payload specialist or in this case a senior pilot to the STS 95 mission 67 year old Senior Astronaut John W Young The world s most experienced astronaut Young is the only man to fly in three different generations of spacecraft Gemini Apollo and the Space Shuttle Young flew the first Gemini mission with Glenn s comrade Gus Grissom and later commanded the Gemini 10 mission He has visited the moon twice first on Apollo 10 the dress rehearsal for the first lunar landing and then as commander of Apollo 16 he became the ninth man to set foot on the lunar surface Young also commanded two Space Shuttle missions including the first voyage of Columbia in 1981 a bold and daring mission that rivaled Glenn s flight in sheer audacity and courage Still on active duty flight status Young has not flown since before the Challenger disaster banished to a bureaucratic limbo

  • Astronaut John W. Young - The Right Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of by Paul E. Wagner
has been 40 years to remind people of the pioneering spirit that our space program represents Why can t NASA stage a little publicity As if no other government agency doesn t Why not give a man who had his career as an astronaut taken away by a secret JFK presidential order because he was a national hero who could not be risked a chance to show that age or physical limitations are not a blinder to dreaming and to show how far our technology has progressed They will run experiments on Glenn draw blood check his bones and urine I ll bet they find out he s a remarkably fit 77 year old They are also going to monitor his sleep Well OK he got dropped from the experiment testing the alleged sleep inducing compound melatonin But how could they measure a dream The most shortsighted argument against this flight is All NASA has shown is that they can send John Glenn back into space 36 years later So all NASA has done is develop a launch vehicle so safe and reliable that it can put a grandfather on board Who else can do that Would a 77 year old human have been strapped into the Friendship 7 capsule in 1962 atop a rocket that had a disturbing track record of exploding No And therein lies NASA s blessing and curse In the last four decades the agency has made the incredible seem mundane through success Over 40 years there have been tragedies The Apollo 1 launch pad fire that claimed Gus Grissom Edward White II and Roger Chaffee on Jan 27 1967 The Challenger disaster in which Ellison Onizuka Francis Dick Scobee Judith Resnik Gregory Jarvis Ronald McNair Michael Smith and schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe perished on Jan 28 1986 The Challenger launch was not even carried live on the major networks at that time a testament to NASA s ability to generate no publicity through competency I designed and edited the front page that day and then went home and cried I do not recall such widespread cynical second guessing and condemnation prior to McAuliffe chasing her dream But then that was before a horrific fireball in a clear blue Florida sky reminded the average person just how dangerous the reach for the stars can be Prior to Thursday there were 91 successful shuttle flights carrying 239 people to the heavens An often forgotten statistic but each mission represents a rung in the ladder to the international space station and a foothold to spring outward But let astronauts walk on the moon or struggle for life in a crippled Apollo 13 craft or stand on the end of a robotic arm and grab a spinning satellite with a gloved hand while the Earth circles below or float free in space with a jet pack as the only lifeboat and we are slackjawed The pictures of stars being born brought to us by a repaired Hubble Space Telescope the

  • Shuttle 'experimental,' astronaut says
Department s National Imagery and Mapping Agency for routine imaging of the shuttle in orbit Although the defense agency s powerful ground based telescopes might have spotted damage to the shuttle before re entry NASA failed to ask for an inspection The board said the need for both measures is so evident that work on them did not need to wait for its investigation of the accident to be wrapped up sometime this summer But Young a veteran of six spaceflights who now serves as associate director of the Johnson Space Center said other changes also are needed to build more conservatism into future shuttle missions Specifically he said the agency needs to expand the role of the International Space Station so that any damage to the thermal protection system can be repaired before re entry Young also said he would like to see NASA alter the trajectory that the shuttle follows after launch so that it could in the event of main engine malfunction during ascent return to selected airports on the East Coast Despite his concerns about safety Young one of 12 Americans who have walked on the moon is decidedly upbeat about the future of human space flight He told 250 Tech engineering students he fully expects to see permanent bases on the moon and manned landings on Mars We ll go back when the president says Do it he said It will take a lot of money but so what We just spent 70 billion on a war in Iraq But Young said it is unrealistic to think human activity in space will take place without other losses like that of Columbia in the future He recalled that back in the early 1980s when he was training for the first shuttle flights some NASA planners claimed

  • John Young's shuttle secret
on the OMS pod Then Young revealed something more The other day I was eating breakfast and Chris Kraft was sitting in the dining room and he told me that we buckled the right main landing gear on STS 1 he said Come to find out they had a gapfiller sticking out and it ducted hot gas into the wheel well That appeared to be the first time almost anybody in the museum s theater had heard about the incident The person sitting next to me well versed in the history of shuttle missions whispered Well that s news Not surprisingly during the question and answer session that followed someone asked Young for more details about the incident Unfortunately Young didn t have much more information to share Recently in the Columbia accident office sitting in the meeting room he said you had a gapfiller sticking up and it ducted hot gas into your wheel well he offered It wasn t clear whether the he Young referred to was Kraft or someone else That s as much as I know about it I ve told you everything I know The audience laughed Don t ask me what ducted in there or what got hot I m sure it s not even on the corrective action reports because the last time I looked I think they deleted that The rest of Young s talk didn t reveal any other significant secrets about his career but was enjoyable nonetheless as he recounted events ranging from the first Gemini mission to the shuttle as well as his hope that NASA will resume human exploration of the Moon and beyond Young s humor kept the evening from getting too serious I get paid for having a hell of a lot of fun every day
